Happy Friday team! As we finish up our wilding pine control work until next summer it’s a good chance to share the purpose of this work

Wilding pine control is hugely important here in New Zealand. While pine trees can be useful in the right places, wilding pines spreading into our hills, farmland, and native areas can cause serious damage if left unmanaged.

They take over tussock country and native ecosystems, block out native plants, reduce biodiversity, and use huge amounts of water from the soil. For farmers, they can quickly invade productive grazing land and become expensive to remove later on.

Keeping on top of wilding pines helps protect our environment, preserve our iconic landscapes, and ensure future generations can still enjoy the open spaces that make NZ unique. A small problem now can become a massive one in just a few years if nothing is done. 🌲🌲🌲🪚🪚🪚

Awesome to complete our node planting project in darfield. Taking this old forestry block and restoring it back to native vegetation through the completion of 5 220 plant nodes.

Ever wondered why node planting is used in old forestry blocks here in NZ? 🌱

After harvesting, the land is often pretty rough—loose soil, exposed areas, and w**ds starting to take over. Instead of planting everything at once, node planting focuses on small clusters of native plants to get things going.

These clusters help stabilise the soil, reduce erosion, and create sheltered spots where young plants can actually survive. Over time, they spread naturally, filling in the gaps and slowly restoring the area.

It’s also a more cost-effective way to bring native bush back, while encouraging biodiversity and letting nature do its thing.

Sometimes starting small is the smartest way to rebuild something big.
