From plan to place.

A little look behind the scenes at how we’re reworking this Mt Eden villa — starting with the existing home, testing the plan, refining the spaces, and slowly bringing the new extension to life in 3D.

The goal isn’t to make the old house feel new.
It’s to let the new work sit comfortably alongside it.

More light, better flow, and a home that feels like it has always belonged here.

To the north, the front elevation opens towards the sea. Strong horizontal lines, generous glazing and finely layered screens form a composed architectural expression—contemporary in form, yet influenced by the restraint and elegance of Chinese literati culture.

Beyond the entry lobby, the house unfolds around a central garden in a continuous, courtyard-like arrangement. The study, garden, garage and utility spaces are connected through this circular sequence, allowing everyday movement through the home to become an experience of changing light, framed views and quiet moments.

The result is a home that feels open and light from within, yet calm and protected from the outside—a restrained and quietly confident contemporary residence shaped around the way its owners live.

The long, linear site presented two key considerations: how to maintain privacy while addressing two street frontages, and how to create a strong architectural presence without making the home feel closed off.

In response to the site’s orientation, the main living spaces are arranged around a sheltered internal courtyard and outdoor entertaining area. Expansive glazing opens the interior towards its private landscape, while deep overhangs and layered architectural screens carefully filter views from the street.
