A family in Invercargill upgraded to a bigger heat pump last winter thinking it would finally sort out their cold lounge. Power bill went up. The room still took an hour to warm up. The unit was oversized for a house with no underfloor insulation, so it was cycling on and off every few minutes instead of running the way it was designed to.

Bigger kilowatts don't fix a leaky thermal envelope. If the heat can't be held, it doesn't matter how much of it the unit produces. That's why our team checks insulation before we recommend any heat pump. Ceiling, underfloor, the lot. We'll only install heating once the insulation is up to standard, because that's the point at which a heat pump can actually do its job.

Get the insulation right first and a smaller, cheaper unit will often outperform a larger one, and cost you less to run through a Deep South winter. 🏡

Hanging the washing on a rack inside feels like the sensible Southland winter move. Free heat from the house, no dryer running, job done. But that rack is quietly adding around 5 litres of moisture to your indoor air every day, and damp air takes significantly more energy to heat than dry air. So your heat pump or heater works harder, for longer, right through the coldest months of the year.

It doesn't show up as one obvious cost. It shows up as a slow drain on the power bill every week of winter, and it hits hardest in the homes already dealing with condensation on the windows and cold walls in the morning. The money you thought you saved by skipping the dryer often gets spent twice over in heating, and you've added mould risk behind linings and on ceilings for good measure.

Running a heat pump in a Southland winter? Three small habits make the biggest difference to your power bill. 🏡

Our install crew is out across Southland every week fitting Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin units, and they see the same thing in home after home. Little changes in how the pump is used save real money. Each one takes under five minutes to sort.

1. Set it to 18-21°C. Cranking the pump up to 24°C will not warm the room any faster. It just runs the unit longer and pushes your power bill up. 18-21°C is the efficient zone these pumps are designed for. Set it there and let it hold steady.

2. Heat the room, close the door. A heat pump trying to warm an open-plan house with cold hallways attached is fighting a losing battle. Shut the door to the room you are heating. The unit reaches temperature quickly, then drops back to a low maintenance cycle.

3. Rinse the filter every month. A clogged filter makes the pump work harder to push air through, and that spikes your power use. Slide the filter out, rinse it under the tap, let it dry, clip it back in. Three minutes, done.

Southland winter morning, and there are two kinds of people. The ones who hit snooze, pull the duvet up to their nose, and negotiate with themselves for another twenty minutes of warmth. And the ones who are already up, fire crackling, kettle on, watching the frost on the paddock catch the first bit of light.

An undersized heat pump runs flat out all winter and still can't keep up. You'll hear it working overtime, watch the power bill climb, and wonder why the lounge never quite warms up on the frostiest Southland nights.

That's why sizing matters. Before we recommend a unit, our team looks at your actual home: the layout, the insulation you've already got, the orientation, the ceiling height, how the sun tracks across the living areas, and where the prevailing southerly hits hardest. A three-bedroom villa in Invercargill with an uninsulated timber floor is a very different heating job to a tidy new-build in Gore.

A correctly sized heat pump holds around 21°C on a cold Southland morning without running flat out. An oversized one short-cycles and wastes power. An undersized one never catches up. Getting the sizing right is what decides whether your winter power bill actually comes down.

Nena's 4-bedroom Otatara home had panel heaters running flat out all night, and the baby's room was still sitting at 6 degrees. A bigger heater was never going to solve that. The problem was above the ceiling, where there was no insulation at all.

From what we see on jobs across Southland, here are the three places heat quietly leaves homes in winter.

The ceiling gap. Heat rises, and in an uninsulated ceiling it disappears straight outside. This is the single biggest heat loss point in most Deep South homes. After we installed ceiling insulation at Nena's place, that same 6-degree room held 16 degrees through the night.

Cold coming up through the floor. Southland floors sit close to cold, damp ground, and without underfloor insulation that cold radiates upward no matter how hard your heater works. Feet always cold even when the room feels warm? The floor is likely where your heat is going.

Walls with no fill. Uninsulated walls let heat bleed out through every exterior surface. Blown-in retrofit wall insulation goes in through small drilled holes without pulling your linings off, so it's a day's work rather than a renovation.

Most homes lose heat from more than one place at once. Fix the biggest gap first and everything else you're already doing starts working better. 🏡
