Are you making your Southland home damper without realising it?

Some everyday winter habits feel completely normal, but they quietly make your home colder, wetter, and more expensive to heat.

Here are three worth knowing about.

1. Drying washing inside. One load hung on a rack indoors adds up to 5 litres of moisture to your air every day. That damp air feels colder, so your heat pump has to work harder to warm the same room.

2. Running an un-flued gas heater. They seem handy, but they release around 1 litre of moisture into your home every hour they run. Over a Deep South winter, that soaks into walls, ceilings, and soft furnishings, and the whole house gets harder to warm.

3. Skipping the morning air-out. Opening a window in a Southland winter feels wrong. But 20 minutes in the morning swaps stale, moisture-heavy air for drier air that heats up faster. Your home actually feels warmer by evening.

Dry air heats up faster than damp air. That's why these small habits matter so much down here. 🏡

A special moment worth sharing.

A few weeks ago, members of our Awarua Synergy team had the privilege of attending the opening of the newly renovated Kiwibank Invercargill branch. The event began with a beautiful karakia led by Rev. George Coleman and supported by Sonny Tonihi, with Sumaria's daughter, Classic, supporting the whakawātea.
During the opening, Kiwibank officially unveiled a meeting room named after our General Manager, Sumaria Beaton-Sikisini, in recognition of her Kiwibank Local Hero Medallist award.
While the room bears Sumaria's name, she would be the first to say that the recognition reflects the collective efforts of many people over many years. From our current and former team members, to our partners, supporters, contractors, and the thousands of whānau we've had the privilege of supporting across Southland, this achievement belongs to everyone who has been part of the journey.
We're incredibly proud of Sumaria and grateful to Kiwibank for recognising the importance of healthy homes, community wellbeing, and the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make a difference.
Ngā mihi nui, Kiwibank, for this thoughtful acknowledgement.

BRRRRRR!!! It's cold down here❄️❄️
Invercargill is set to see another night of freezing temperatures. For comfort and efficiency, keep your heat pump running overnight on a low setting rather than switching it off and trying to recover temperature the next morning.
This helps reduce extra strain and workload on your unit.

Karla still sounds a bit stunned when she talks about it. She turned the temperature down, turned the fan speed down, and her new heat pump went on to warm twice the area in half the time she expected. That is the moment we love hearing about: a Southland homeowner bracing for a marginal improvement on a cold July night, then leaning back into the sofa because the living room is finally, genuinely holding the heat. Sized right, installed right, running quieter and cheaper than the settings she thought she needed. 🏡

A heat pump that is right for Christchurch can be completely wrong for an Invercargill lounge. Southland winters hit differently, and a spec sheet on a store shelf will not always tell you how a unit performs when a hard Winton frost settles in. Having installed heating and insulation solutions across more than 5,000 Deep South homes, we have seen exactly what works when the temperature drops below freezing and what leaves families shivering.

First, sizing is not just about floor area. A proper calculation must account for ceiling height, window placement, and which way your living room faces. An undersized unit will run flat-out all winter, chewing through power while struggling to keep the room warm. Second, where the unit is installed matters just as much as the model itself. Placing a heat pump in a spot with poor airflow means you end up with one toasty corner and a freezing hallway, forcing the system to work twice as hard.

Third, heating and insulation must work together. Putting a high-spec heat pump into a home with bare ceiling timbers or draughty underfloor spaces is like wearing a heavy coat with no shoes, as the warmth you pay for escapes straight out the roof. Finally, cold-climate performance matters more than the purchase price. Many standard units stop heating and start defrosting themselves when the temperature drops to -5°C, which is why choosing brands engineered specifically for Deep South conditions is the only way to protect your power bill.

If you are planning an upgrade before the worst of the winter cold snaps arrive, our local team is here to help you get it right the first time. Give us a call on 0800 WARM SOUTH or send us a message to arrange a free, no-pressure home assessment. We will give you a straight answer about what will actually keep your home warm down here. 🏠

An Invercargill family turned their heat pump's temperature DOWN, dropped the fan speed, and ended up heating twice the area in half the time. Sounds backwards. It isn't.

Most Southland homes have a heat pump on the wall, and most of them are being run in a way that quietly burns through power without delivering the warmth you're paying for. With electricity prices climbing around 8.5% a year down here, those small habits add up fast on the winter bill.

We've pulled together the three things we see go wrong most often in homes across Southland and Otago. They're in the slides.

1. Lower settings actually heat better than blasting it on high
2. Insulation has to come first, or the heat pump is filling a bucket with a hole in it
3. A one-hour annual service protects years of efficient running

Get those three sorted and a well-matched heat pump in a properly insulated home is about as cost-effective as Deep South winter heating gets.

If you're not sure whether yours is sized right, serviced recently, or working against poor insulation, flick us a message or give us a call. We'll come have a look and tell you straight. 🏠
