As Southland frosts settle in, your heat pump is likely running flat out. But if those filters haven't been cleaned since last year, you could be paying full price for only 70% of the actual heat.

Mid-June is when our home heating systems in the Deep South work the hardest to keep the cold at bay ❄ When dust and lint build up on the indoor unit filters, the fan has to work twice as hard to push warm air into your living room.

The good news is that you do not need to call in a technician to fix this. Cleaning your filters is a simple job you can easily do yourself this weekend to make sure you are getting every bit of warmth you pay for.

Just pop open the front cover of your indoor unit, slide the plastic mesh filters out, and give them a quick vacuum or rinse under the tap. Make sure they are completely dry before sliding them back in.

An undersized heat pump runs flat-out all winter and still leaves you cold. And it chews through power doing it.

We've assessed over 10,000 homes across Southland and Otago. The ones that stay warmest in July aren't always the ones with the most insulation. They're the ones where the right type went in the right place.

That's the lesson experienced homeowners have already learned, usually the hard way. If you're insulating for the first time, here's the same starting point they wish someone had given them. 🏠

1. Ceiling first, floor second.
Heat rises. In a typical Southland home, your ceiling is where the biggest losses happen, so that's where your first dollar should go. Underfloor matters too, especially on those old piled villas in Invercargill and Gore, but it's round two, not round one.

2. R-value on the label isn't R-value in your roof.
A batt squashed into a tight space or left with gaps performs nowhere near what the packaging promises. Real-world performance comes down to how it's installed. We see this every week when we open up ceilings that were "done" ten years ago.

3. Retrofits play by different rules than new builds.
With a new build you can pack in whatever you like. With a retrofit you're working around wiring, downlights, dwangs and existing framing. The smart move is matching the product to what your home will actually accept, not chasing the highest number on paper.
