Our Cromwell, Alexandra and Wānaka teams recently joined forces to deliver 180m³ of 4019AJ20 steel fibre concrete for the Allied Concrete Wānaka branch yard.

With 12 trucks on the road completing the 90 km round trip from Cromwell, it was a big coordinated effort from everyone involved. Great to see our teams working together to keep the pour moving and get the job done.

A huge thanks to everyone who played a part, and a special shout-out to Gavin Magrath for his help on this project.

Specifying low-carbon concrete requires more than selecting a sustainable mix.

Achieving the right balance between embodied carbon reduction and project performance requires careful consideration of strength development, workability, curing, durability and constructability.

Our latest technical guidance outlines key considerations for specifiers, engineers and contractors, including:
• Selecting the appropriate mix design
• Managing workability and on-site handling
• Optimising curing and early-age strength development
• Using project-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to support sustainability objectives

As the industry continues to reduce embodied carbon, informed specification is becoming increasingly important to delivering successful project outcomes.

A great example of careful planning and teamwork at the Highbank Power Station.

For the first of five major pours, all concrete was batched from our Ashburton plant, with significant support from our Christchurch team. The pour involved 12 Allied Concrete trucks, including six from Christchurch, delivering specialised 30 MPa self-compacting concrete through two line pumps into the building. A continuous supply was essential, as the flow of concrete through the pumps could not be interrupted.

Every load was slump-flow tested by our technician, Chucky, before leaving the plant, targeting a 400 mm spread, and was tested again by James on arrival to confirm it had reached the required 650 mm spread.

A special mention to JB, our batcher from Ashburton, whose batching experience helped maintain the consistency required across every load.

Well done to our Christchurch and Ashburton teams, and thanks to Marty's Concrete Pumps and Seipp Construction for the collaboration.
