In Karamea today, I got a firsthand look at a truly amazing project.
Clean Streams Karamea Incorporated is a non-profit founded in 2015 with the belief that by working together, communities can bring about positive environmental change through riparian planting. They work mainly with farmers and landowners in Karamea and across the wider Buller district, too.
Craig Stenhouse (chairperson) and Hannah Lawson (secretary) showed me around the nursery, and it quickly became apparent that what has been achieved over the past 10 years is no small feat.
The native plant nursery was built in 2020 and now produces around 72,000 high-quality native seedlings a year and provides local jobs, too. And they’re still growing.
If you need riparian planting, get in touch with these guys. They’ll not only sell you plants and trees, but help you get them in the ground, too.
