One giant pumpkin. One young grower. A whole school ready to take on the challenge. 🎃

Meet Matahui School, our October Young Growers Award recipient!

It all began when one student grew an enormous pumpkin and proudly brought it to school. His harvest sparked lessons in science, maths, art and cooking as the children measured, saved seeds, cooked and shared it together.

Then that student had another idea: why not get the whole school growing pumpkins?

We loved his enthusiasm and wanted to help that idea grow. With giant pumpkin seeds and propagation supplies from Kings Seeds, the school’s growing competition is now underway!

The seeds are now planted, and the young grower behind it all has created the competition guidelines and his own growing instructions to help his classmates get started. There are even categories for the smallest, heaviest, perfect and ugliest pumpkin. Plenty of room for a few characters in this patch!

Congratulations, Matahui School, and a special cheer for the student who started it all. We can’t wait to follow your progress through to the pumpkin judging in March.

All your lettuce ready at once… then nothing for the next salad?🥬

Succession sowing lettuce is a simple way to keep fresh leaves coming, without a whole row demanding to be eaten in the same week!

Sow little and often, just 6–8 lettuce seeds every 3–4 weeks through spring, summer and into autumn.

While one batch is ready to harvest, the next is growing on, and another is just getting started. Small sowings, staggered harvests and fewer lettuces going to waste.

Succession Sowing Tips:
🌱 Sow a small batch of seeds.
🌱 Set a reminder for your next sowing in 3–4 weeks.
🌱 Adjust the amount you sow to suit your household’s appetite!

Does anyone else pop outside for a peaceful garden moment and come back with a to-do list?

There are seeds to sow, beds to prepare, seedlings to plant and plans that seemed perfectly manageable when you dreamed them up in winter.

If you feel both excited and overwhelmed by your garden, you’re not alone. It’s normal for both feelings to show up together. Many gardeners know this well. The garden is a place where we can slow down, take a breath, and focus on something growing. It’s always been a space for mental wellbeing.

As Mental Health Awareness Week comes to an end, here are a few gentle reminders for anyone looking at their garden and wondering where to begin.

🌱 Make the job smaller.
Choose one pot, one section of a bed or one tray of seeds. “Sort the garden” is a rather enormous task. “Sow a row of carrots” gives you somewhere to begin.

🌱 Separate what needs doing from what would be lovely.
Watering young seedlings might need your attention today. Creating an entirely new flower border can stay on the wish list. Everything doesn’t have to happen this weekend.

🌱 Grow for the life you have this season.
A few favourite vegetables and a pot of flowers can bring plenty of pleasure. Give yourself permission to match your garden to your time, energy and budget.

🌱 Try ten minutes, then check in.
Water a few pots or pull a handful of weeds. If you feel like continuing, lovely. If you’ve had enough, that counts too.

🌱 Let someone into your patch.
Ask for a hand, swap seedlings or invite a friend over for a garden wander. A little company can make a big job feel lighter.

🌱 Spend some time there without working.
Bring your cuppa outside. Watch a bee or see what’s bloomed since yesterday. You don’t need to finish all the weeding before you enjoy a quiet moment.

You’re allowed to love your garden and feel overwhelmed by it. You’re allowed to leave things unfinished. And you’re allowed to enjoy what’s growing while there are still weeds in the background.

Meet our October Community Spirit Award winner: Outplay. Outlearn.

A little gardening experience can spark something that keeps growing long after a playgroup session ends.

That’s exactly what parent Jessie noticed when her daughter began attending Outplay. Outlearn. Over the past three terms, opportunities to grow flowers and other plants from seeds and bulbs have inspired her to keep growing at home, too.

“We have even purchased more seeds to grow extra plants at home, and she takes great pride in caring for them and watching them grow,” Jessie shared in her nomination.

Founded by Hayley and Emmie, Outplay. Outlearn in Selwyn & Christchurch gives tamariki hands-on opportunities to explore nature, build confidence and discover the satisfaction of caring for something living. It also brings families together to connect and learn alongside their children.

We’re delighted to award Outplay. Outlearn. $500 through our Community Spirit Award, supporting more little discoveries and growing adventures.
