Dreaming of wildflowers...

Last spring, gardener & photographer Claire Mossong began transforming part of her rural garden in Gebbies Valley with wildflowers. By early December, poppies and soft drifts of colour were spilling through the space. Now, the second season is already springing back into life.

Claire has also been wonderfully honest about the journey. A wildflower meadow isn’t entirely sow-and-forget. Some areas flourish quickly, others need a little more encouragement, and no two areas will ever grow in quite the same way.

Whether you have room for a sweeping meadow, a roadside patch or simply one forgotten corner of the garden, our wildflower range has plenty of beautiful blooms waiting to be sown.

A huge and heartfelt thank you to Claire for these dreamy photographs, for sharing the honest lessons from her first season, and for transporting us straight into her beautiful wildflower patch.

Ever tasted a tomato so good it made you question every supermarket one you’ve ever bought? That’s the magic of growing tomatoes at home, and it all begins with knowing how to sow tomato seeds the right way. Whether you’ve got a sprawling garden or a few pots on the deck, tomato growing in NZ is easier (and more addictive) than you think.

Here’s how to grow tomatoes that burst with flavour, thrive in our unique climate, and keep you stocked all season long - even into winter, if you dry them right.

Check out our guide, 'How to Grow Tomatoes in NZ' on our website here: https://www.kingsseeds.co.nz/blogs/sowing-and-growing/how-to-grow-tomaotes

Why do we have SUCH a massive range of tomato seeds? 🍅

Tiny currant-sized morsels, hefty slicers, colourful cherries, richly flavoured heirlooms and plenty of wonderfully unusual varieties with stories stretching back through generations.

And once again this season, we’re proud to continue our partnership with the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust, helping protect and preserve rare, open-pollinated food crops here in New Zealand.

Thanks to the incredible support of our growing community, thousands of dollars were donated directly back into heritage seed research and preservation. Those funds help to bolster heritage wheat varieties (now available) and support the Trust’s ongoing work to safeguard precious seeds.

So, when you choose one of these special varieties, you’re doing far more than deciding which tomato belongs in this summer’s sandwiches.

You’re helping to:

🍅 Protect valuable genetic diversity
🍅 Preserve rare, open-pollinated varieties
🍅 Keep their growing knowledge and stories alive
🍅 Support important research here in New Zealand

Now is the perfect time to start exploring, planning and sowing your tomatoes for the season ahead. Will you grow a trusted favourite, preserve a little piece of history, or make room for something completely new?

I am back in the Kings Seeds row!!! I have loved the process of filming one garden row over the winter. The winter in Northland has been tough, lots of frost and cooler temperatures than usual. However, there has still been an abundance of veg going out the door.
--
Leading into Spring, I will be potting up the eggplants in the greenhouse, maintenance weeding this bed using my wire hoe and harvesting the last of the winter crops
--
I hope you have had a great winter in the garden! See you again in this row in spring to see what we have grown by then! ~ Nadia

Thank you Nadia, for sharing your garden with us, we love seeing how productive it is over winter in Zone 1.

Still feeling overwhelmed with starting a garden? Why not try starting a benchtop kitchen garden of microgreens and sprouts? This is a gratifying way to dip your toes into the world of gardening! Not only is it quick and easy to grow these little powerhouses, but you'll also enjoy fresh, nutrient-packed greens right at your fingertips.

Microgreens are young plants harvested just after they begin to grow their first true leaves. They come in a wide variety of flavours and colours, from zesty radish to sweet basil and can easily elevate your salads, sandwiches and smoothies with them. With just a small handful of seeds, soil and a bit of sunlight, you can have fresh greens ready to harvest in as little as 7-14 days!

Sprouts, on the other hand, are seeds that have germinated without soil and are consumed at an even earlier stage. They are packed with nutrients and have a delightful crunch - perfect for adding to stir-fries, sandwiches, wraps or just eating fresh!

Setting up your benchtop garden requires minimal equipment and space, making it an ideal project for any kitchen. Just grab some seed trays, soil, your favourite seeds and you're ready to go! We even have Microgreen Starter Kits and Sprouting Kits to make it easier.

Head to our website and browse all the options today. www.kingsseeds.co.nz
