We’re proud to showcase our work on Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library, a landmark Wellington project focused on strengthening and modernising one of the city’s most important public spaces.

Our team delivered the suspended ceiling systems, working within the project’s te taiao, the natural environment design theme while meeting the technical demands of a major civic build.

Te Matapihi is designed to achieve a NZGBC 5-star rating, supporting Wellington’s goal of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2050. This project recently won the Master Builder Supreme Award for over $10M. Having worked on similarly ambitious projects like Ngā Mokopuna The Living Pā, we’re proud to contribute to spaces where sustainability, performance and design all need to align.

A special thanks to LT McGuinness Ltd and everyone else involved in bringing Te Matapihi back to life!

🤔 Did you know? In Shakespeare's era, theatre ceilings were already being used to help performers' voices carry.

Hard plaster, timber and enclosed roof structures could reflect sound back towards the audience, like an acoustic mirror.

But modern acoustic ceilings solve a different problem. In offices, schools, hospitals and commercial interiors, the goal is often not to make sound louder, but to stop it from bouncing around the room.

That's where acoustic panels and ceiling tiles come in: they absorb reflected sound, reduce echo and make spaces easier to work and communicate in.

Project Highlight: Simpson Grierson

Completed in 2023, the Simpson Grierson fitout in Wellington City was designed to create more than a premium office environment.

For a leading commercial law firm, the space needed to feel polished, calm and highly thoughtful from the moment clients arrive.

The suspended ceilings played a major role in achieving this. Across the reception, meeting rooms, and lounge spaces, the suspended ceilings helped to create a premium first impression, support acoustic control and define zones in the building without relying on heavy walls or closed-off spaces.

The result is a workplace that is refine, functional and welcoming, with ceiling details that support the look and performance of the interior.

The project went on to win the $100-$500K Category at the AWCI award in 2024.

When do we use metal vs timber in ceilings and partitions?
