PAINTING TIP | Don’t Paint Over Peeling Paint

It may be tempting to paint straight over an old, peeling surface, but proper preparation is essential for a quality, long-lasting finish.

Before repainting:

• Check that the existing paint is firmly attached
• Remove all loose or flaking paint
• Repair cracks, holes and damaged areas
• Sand rough or uneven surfaces
• Remove dust and residue after sanding
• Apply the appropriate primer or sealer where needed

As Resene explains, an adequate degree of surface preparation is essential because the adhesion of the painting system depends on it.

Dulux NZ also recommends scraping off all loose and flaking paint and ensuring the surface is dry before proceeding.

Painting over loose or peeling paint can result in further peeling, poor adhesion and an uneven finish.

Good preparation helps create a smoother, more durable result.

This roof had been through plenty of sun, rain and changing weather, gradually showing the effects of exposure over time.

Before the new coating was applied, the roof was carefully prepared, thoroughly cleaned, weathered areas addressed, and the surface made ready for a smooth, even finish.

Taking the time to properly prepare the surface makes a big difference to the final result, and it was amazing to see this roof transformed.
