Well its been great while it lasted! Thank you to everyone who supported the company. A busy mind, rainy whether and the final straw an elbow injury that wasn't letting up from falling off a ladder a few weeks ago and I'm likely heading back to Wellington to work.

In the meantime anyone wanting their lawn mowed in Masterton area I would recommend Jakob Tulloch of Mows and More or Fiona Hunter (who also does firewood).

Again thank you everyone - I've learned and lot and met some wonderful people. Anyone thinking of getting into business 1. get an accountant 2. do the IRD intro to business courses 3. Go for it!

Big yellow is alive and well and now joined by a companion Little Red a Honda HRX217YUA. This means less costs of towing a large trailer and Big Yellow around and keeping prices down for now.

Disaster today as Big Yellow (the mower) coughed and spluttered to a no start situation. The good people at Stihl Greytown have it in the workshop. Fingers crossed its only a few days out of action. As if the rain last week wasn't enough. Oh well. Apologies to existing customers with larger lawns for delays in getting to your lawn.

Because the cost of fuel has gone up a lot recently I have had to increase my prices as well as at 6 March. When I started diesel was $1.68 per litre but now its over $2.00. Premium 95 was $2.65 per litre and now north of $3.00. That's an average 14% increase in just 5 months. To make a long story short my price now starts from $38 plus GST (it was $35 in November).

This is not a paid advertisement. Its not a book review either. Its a message drawing attention to a book about soil that corresponds with Hey Dads approach to lawncare.

What is the big picture about soil? What role does soil play in our lives? How does soil affect climate and keep the planet going? I doubt these are the sorts of questions that keep you up at night but if you pick up Matthew Evans' 2021 book Soil you'll find the answers to these questions and more. Evans' book shows how soil is part of a system and might change you mind on what a good plant is. How is this relevant to lawnmowing and keeping a lawn? Well thinking about what you can do to improve your lawn should include looking after the soil. A healthy soil will have less weeds and a better looking lawn. It will also use less water because healthy soil maintains its moisture better. And a lawn with deeper and healthier roots and also become more naturally resistant to disease.

Many most lawn care companies don’t consider soil health but its the basic building block for a great lawn.

Have a read of Evans book and see what you think and whether it changes your mind about what a good lawn could be.
