To mulch or compost?
If your lawns are over 7cm long then composting your clippings is recommended.
If less than 7cm they can be mulched, yet only take the top third off.

Arguments for and against mulching
Some experts say leaving clippings on the lawn is beneficial to return moisture and nutrients into the lawn, instead of fertilising. Others maintain that clippings form a layer of dead grass, blocking air and light and providing a protective layer to harbor grass diseases. Both of these schools of thought are accurate, depending on the situation.

What is best?
Leaving clippings on the lawn can act as a replacement fertiliser, unless you are leaving too much. To avoid this, position your cutting deck so it removes only the top one third of your lawn.

If you aren’t able to mow regularly and the lawn becomes longer than 7 cm in height, it’s a better idea to compost the clippings and dispose of them. This will mean your freshly cut grass isn’t smothered, or trapped in by a layer grass that could impact on the new growth beneath.

Watering - when is the best time to water to your lawn?

It's best to do it in the early morning.

Don’t water in the heat of the day as much of the water will be lost through evaporation.

Watering in the evening can allow a breeding zone for bacteria and other lawn diseases.

Generally our lawns needs three centimetres of rain each week, so when we have weeks where it is dry in Masterton and hasn’t rained that much, try watering the lawn alternate mornings, as per the Masterton District Council water restrictions to make up for the lack of rain 😀
