The Wisdom of the Hedge

They are the living architecture of living spaces. A dynamic and evolving boundary that breathes life into a landscape. Goodness me…that all sounds very Gardens Illustrated, doesn’t it? Truth is, we simply love hedges - towering, living walls of gorgeousness. They build the many ‘rooms’ in our own garden, creating expectation and even a tad of mystery as you drift from one garden gathering to another.

Enouncing a favourite hedge would be to create family friction so a palette of the preferred is easier to talk about and in both Stablehouse and Red Sheds Gardens this incudes stalwarts Beech, Bay and Michelia. There are others of course that we recommend - Camelia, Hornbeam, Acer, Prunus, Tilia Cordata…and others that we don’t, Griselina, Corokia, Red Robin… any mention of these will see you escorted off the property.

Beech hedges are dominant at Stablehouse. They are majestic. Smooth oval leaves of rich bronze smelted in Autumn then continuing to glow throughout winter before being dismissed by fresh green spring growth.

The Bay (Laurus Nobilis) hedge is the garden’s bodyguard; deeply protective, robust, dense and highly tolerant of coastal conditions, dry summers and frosts. Without the bastion of its surrounding Bay hedge our vegetable garden would whimper, weep, then probably curl up and die.

The Michelia displays at the Red Sheds Garden are attracting a ridiculous amount of attention after just two years in the growing. Even small aircraft are starting to circle them. The variety Lyn has planed is ‘Inspiration’. Others include Gracipes, Paton Pink, Fairy Cream, Lemon Scent and Church Mouse, they’re all gifted children. It’s a stunning evergreen hedge, a year-round beauty. The blooms, from late winter to spring bring to mind a Paris perfumery yet as elegant as it presents, Michelia is tough and resilient as well.

What is that on yonder tree?

No doubt about it…it’s a blossom!
The garden is stirring, its beauty sleep very close to an end. Tulips are getting out of bed, Pyrus is already heavy with armfuls of white confetti and the beech hedges are chatting with each other about a possible change of wardrobe. It’s a wonderfully optimistic time of the year, just by digging a hole you can add a promise of life and colour to your garden.
Come for a wander and a chat at the nursery here at Stablehouse, it’s a rather pleasant place to while away the minutes or even an hour. The aisles are full of splendid specimen trees, shrubs, flowers, buxus, grasses, citrus…all ready and waiting to join Spring’s mardi gras in your garden.

Magnificent Michelia.

There’s something a little ‘Marilyn’ about Michelia Paton Pink. Very glossy, very elegant, a soft, full and Rubenesque flower, a tad melodramatic and renowned as a notorious scene stealer. And right now is the perfect time and opportunity to plant Michelia aka Marilyn, in your garden. A new wee shipment arrived a week or two ago - some were carried away by customers at the Garden Fiesta at Clareville last Saturday but there’s plenty more in store, as well as a thousand or so other magnificent trees, shrubs, citrus, hydrangeas, grasses, ivys, lavenders, and of course buxus, so many buxus…

It’s Beech time!

The European Beech. Or Fagus sylvatica if you want to impress at your next dinner party. Here at Stablehouse Garden the beech hedge plays an indispensable role in the construction of our many ‘rooms’. It is the walls, the frame, the corridors that create the formal structure of the garden. At three metres tall, these hedges stand to attention around each enclosure or beside each display, creating expectation and even a little mystery as one room after another is revealed. And they are quite beautiful. In the warmer months they are a fresh, crisp green. But come autumn the leaves turn to copper, glowing in the sunlight like newly smelted bronze. The frame itself is a part of the masterpiece.

Last week we took delivery of 150 young beech trees ready and waiting to help you create your own hedge. They prefer full sun to partial shade plus a well-drained soil and right now is the perfect time to put them in the ground. They are currently 60-90cm tall, plant them 0.5m apart. The price is $15 each.

Stock comes in, stock goes out…

A plethora of plants, splashes of splendor, oodles of ‘oarsomeness’, our nursery is bulging with new and favourite specimens. Come for a green and pleasant wander and some good gardening gossip. It’s the perfect time to dig a hole or six and put plants in their place, and if we haven’t got it, we’ll get it because we are the plant detectives!

And the Angels flew, and the Hellebores too…

Thursday approaches, and with it comes the fluttering Stablehouse flag at the gate, signaling the nursery is open. The skies may be a bit on the pewter side but it is planting time, and we have the plants. Many, many plants. Glorious trees, citrus, graphic grasses, shrubs, perennials full of promise, heavenly hydrangeas, buxus, bay, lilies, and a special mention of three favourites…
Hellebore Moondance, the winter rose, a beautiful bloom, and Senecio candicans – Angel Wings, with its large, velvety, silver-white foliage, a wonderful show-off that gathers a truckload of comments at every open garden day here at Stablehouse Garden. And no.3 on the treasured list this week - a throng, an abundance, a plethora, a bounty… of newly arrived Beech trees, just puppies right now but ready to grow with indecent haste into a most magnificent hedge, brazen green in the warm months, a wall of smelted bronze in autumn and winter.

The Wairarapa monsoon has finished (hopefully). The ground is well-watered, to put it mildly. The soil is soft, begging for holes to be dug, and the Stablehouse Nursery is open every Thursday with a resplendent range of trees, plants, flowers, grasses, citrus and buxus ready and waiting to glorify your garden.

Naked trees looking for a good home.

They’re shivering a little in the early mornings, as you would when your clothes have fallen off and the temperatures are single digits. But what doesn’t freeze you makes you stronger and our stocks of specimen trees, shrubs, buxus, hydrangeas, Angel Wings, citrus and grasses are particularly robust and ready to snuggle into a hole in your garden which right now is especially easy to dig.
