A few weeks ago, the BioRich wheelbarrow and watering can rolled through the streets of Hastings for the annual Blossom Parade.

Designed by local artist Rick Terstappen and made entirely from upcycled materials, it was a fitting nod to what we do at BioRich, turning waste into something useful.

Filled with spring colour and BioRich goodness, it brought this year’s theme 'Great Things Grow Here' to life.

A brilliant day celebrating spring and our Hawke’s Bay community!

Tucked away on the coast, Cape Sanctuary is doing incredible work restoring native biodiversity, from predator control to planting thousands of native trees each year. Behind the scenes, their nursery plays a vital role in this effort, growing strong, healthy native plants ready to return to the land.

We’re proud to support this work, with Cape Sanctuary using BioRich potting mix to help nurture their seedlings from the very beginning. It’s a small part of a much bigger system, but it’s a great reminder that healthy soil sits at the heart of healthy ecosystems.

At St Georges Restaurant, compost is part of a much bigger system. With a kitchen garden just metres from the restaurant, much of what's served is grown on-site, harvested at its peak, and brought straight into the kitchen. It's a model built around seasonality, care, and a direct connection between soil and plate.

Behind the scenes, St Georges Restaurant operates a closed-loop system, returning kitchen and dining waste to the soil to support future crops.

Alongside their own composting practices, BioRich forms part of the wider system, contributing to soil health and overall consistency. As part of Compost Awareness Week, we're proud to share stories like this - where compost plays a role in how food is grown, prepared, and experienced.

This Compost Awareness Week, we’re proud to celebrate the people and organisations doing incredible work across Hawke’s Bay.

Hohepa Hawke's Bay is a powerful example of what can grow when people, land, and purpose come together. Their biodynamic farms and gardens support people with intellectual disabilities to live and work in a meaningful way, growing food, caring for the land, and contributing to a shared sense of purpose.

“We’ve been using Bio Rich compost at Hohepa for several years. We recently moved to a no-dig system to improve soil health and increase opportunities for our people to participate. BioRich has been central to this transition. It provides excellent fertility, builds organic matter, and supports thriving soil life. As a living mulch, it also helps suppress weeds - an important advantage in organic growing. BioRich feeds our soil, which feeds our vegetables, and ultimately our people.”

Their farm shop is just down the road from BioRich and a chance to experience the produce and some of the best cheeses you’ll try.
