Members, Another interesting field day for you.

10am 10 February 2024

We will visit
Justin Wells of Logs2Lumber ltd
and their Wood-Mizer bandsaw mill permanently located in the Ngatimoti vicinity where they have been sawing a variety of wood species from local sources

Justin will show us his quarter sawing method for generating stable boards from stress prone eucalyptus.

He has just completed a house lot of eucalyptus quarter sawn for flooring. This will air dry on site for a year before further processing.
Justin will pass on some of what he has learned milling and drying hardwoods and native timber.

After lunch

We will have a presentation by Chris Ensor of Mosaic Aotearoa, a new forest advisory and project management service. I have asked him to address what he refers to as “low intervention” silvaculture, or lack thereof, concerning self regenerating pine forests.

While his company doesn’t necessarily advocate this forestry regime, Chris will discuss the prospective markets, challenges, and management of this type forestry.

Chris will also explain their coming effort to generate a forest register and how it works. This is a no cost service which will most benefit the small grower to get his product out there.

I will send out directions and any programme changes in the week before the field day. We will start at 10am, have a break for lunch about midday and start up again about 1pm.

Logs 2 Lumber ltd Sawmill site is just off the Waiwhero Road and will be marked.

Any Questions call PJ at 5418456

Field Day This Saturday

November 18th

Description as Follows ...

First we will visit Dean Walker’s Kaka Hill native forest where they have been logging and milling for several years under a sustained management permit.
Dean will fill us in on the maintenance and management of a native forest under permit and describe his experience milling beech. Dean is also interested in development of a “geospatial “ web based tool to connect forestry/timber related industries. Dean will be able to explain what this means and how the tool might serve us.
Directions: go south on State Hwy 6, past Kohatu and Quinney’s Bush and turn off left at the Korere-Top House Road (goes through KiKiwa). About 10km along we’ll have a sign at the Rainy River Road taking you off to the right. Follow the signs to Alan Gully Road.

We will return to the Kohatu Café about noon for lunch, a drink and chat, then head out about 1 o’clock to visit W***y Cameron. Target time is 1:30pm at W***y’s. His property and base are at the old Golden Downs Village. He will show us the mixed species he has growing here and describe the utilization of circular verses bandsaw mills. As well he’ll explain his philosophy of developing a polycultural diversity over a monoculture. This should generate some good discussion.
Directions: from the Kohatu corner head back toward Nelson. Just 3-4km along turn right onto Valley Road. This goes past the Golden Downs Golf Club and is an alternate route to KiKiwa and Top House. There will be a sign at W***y’s place where Valley Road joins Stock Road. Old Golden Down’s Village is hidden in the trees at this corner. If coming from Nelson turn off State Hwy 6 just pass Belgrove, left up Wai-iti Valley toward Top House and St Arnaud. The road changes name to Stock Road where it is joins 88 Valley Road but keep going another 6-8km to the Golden Downs Village corner. There will be a sign, don’t pass the gun shooting range.

Hope to see you there. Any questions, contact PJ at 035418456, or Murray at 0210409979
