We rebuild houses. We take them back to the frame, work out what's worth keeping, and make them whole again.

That's not a bad description of what a woman goes through after a breast cancer diagnosis, either. Surgery after surgery, appointment after appointment, getting herself back.

The research we're funding is about making that rebuild shorter for the next one.

We're wearing pink all month.

Ask any of us why and you'll get a straight answer: one in nine New Zealand women will be told she has breast cancer. Some of them are our clients. Some of them are our families.

So all October, the Smith & Sons Nelson crew is on the tools in pink, raising money for Breast Cancer Cure, with 100% of it going to research for a cure. And there's a very pink chilly bin up for grabs. Details on Monday.

So — why were a bunch of builders at a fashion show last Friday?
Because one in nine New Zealand women will be told she has breast cancer, and for our network that's not a statistic. It's personal for us at the top, and it's personal in nearly every office.
Breast Cancer Cure funds New Zealand research aimed at one thing: a cure. This October, all 22 Smith & Sons offices are getting behind them. Your local crew will have the details from 1 October.
