Creating a way through, and reasons to stop along the way.

This was one of those projects where a deck needed to do much more than create outdoor floor space.

This side of the house had no practical connection from the back of the property through to the front. On a sloping site surrounded by established planting, the challenge was to make that connection feel like it belonged there.

So rather than one large deck, we created a series of timber platforms, pathways and steps that move through the garden and connect the different levels of the property.

Along the way, we incorporated the sauna, an outdoor shower and smaller places to sit and enjoy the garden. Existing trees and planting became part of the design, rather than something the deck simply worked around.

The result is a way through the property that has become a destination in itself.

Sometimes the spaces in between are what make the whole garden work.

Nobody asks for a deck because they love timber boards.

What they really want is somewhere to sit with a coffee, fire up the BBQ, have friends over, or simply stay outside a little longer.

That’s why we think of decks as more than something attached to the back of a house. Done well, they become another living space and help connect the home with the garden around it.

Some lawns just make life easier.

Green, tidy and ready to use, without the mowing, muddy patches or constant battle to keep it looking good.

That’s what we love about artificial grass in the right setting.

Here, it creates a beautiful green space alongside the deck and established planting, giving the garden that lovely feeling of lawn without asking much in return.

What does a “mess garden” look like a year later?

We’re back at the Sprig & Fern in Marsden Valley, revisiting a garden we planted almost a year ago.

The idea here was never to make everything neat and formal. It was to create a lush, layered garden that would fill out, spill through the space and feel more natural as it matured.

And that’s exactly what’s starting to happen.

Tree ferns are putting on size, groundcovers are spreading, flowers are appearing, and the whole garden is beginning to settle into itself.

Sometimes the best gardens get better by looking a little less controlled.

If you avoid part of your garden, something’s not working.

There’s usually one. The steep bank. The awkward level change. The part of the section that feels like more effort than it’s worth.

Good landscaping isn’t always about adding more. Sometimes it’s about making the space you already have easier to move through and much more useful.

Here, creating a proper connection between levels completely changed how this part of the property could be used.

When a space becomes easier to get to, it tends to become part of everyday life again.

There are some projects that mean a little more than just the finished result.

This has been one of them.

After a few weather delays, we’re excited to finally hand this space back to the Stoke Methodist Church and the local community.

What was once an underused area has been transformed into a welcoming place where people can sit, meet, relax and enjoy being outdoors. That was always the goal.

The new lawn is down, the mowing strips are in place to create clean, easy-to-maintain edges, and the planting is settling in beautifully. Before long, the Acer Bloodgood will burst into leaf and this space will take on a whole new look.

A huge thank you to everyone involved, and especially the wonderful team at Stoke Methodist Church for their patience, encouragement and trust throughout the project.

The lawn will need around another 10 days to establish, but after that, it’s yours to enjoy.

Projects like this remind us that landscaping isn’t just about gardens. It’s about creating places where people can gather, connect and make memories.

Watching a community space come to life.

We’re back at the Methodist Church in Stoke, and after a few weather delays it’s finally time to bring this garden together.

Planting is always one of our favourite stages. The larger feature trees and shrubs go in first, creating the structure of the garden, before the smaller plants fill in the spaces around them.

The vision for this project has always been simple. Create a welcoming place where people can sit, meet, relax and enjoy being outdoors.

We can’t wait to show you the finished result.
