03/03/2026

Today as President of NZEIA and along with ME Master Electricians, we are going to give an oral submission to the RRC Regulatory Review Committee regarding the electrical licensing endorsements from the EWRB and MBIE. These endorsements are not what industry asked for and initially consulted on, as add-ons to your electrical license, backed up by continuous professional development, i.e. do the course, be deemed competent and then do yearly online training to update your skills.
Instead the new endorsements are 41 new classes of license, all requiring a fee, a course along with minimal training, assessment and competency guidelines from our regulator.
NZEIA welcomes competency training and we see this as a necessary step towards keeeping up with technology, but adding more cost and bureaucracy to an already overwhelmed electrical industry is not clear and progressive legislative guidance.
It’s time our leaders in government listen to industry and the trades it serves.

New Zealand's electrical regulations are being updated with the Electricity (Safety) Amendment Regulations 2025, which will come into effect on 13 November 2025. This update introduces a more streamlined process for referencing the latest editions of standards, ensuring the regulations align with modern practices and international best practice. The key change is allowing the most current version of a standard to be cited, rather than outdated, specific editions and there are a lot of changes.
