Need some seasonal colour in your garden? Take some inspiration from the photos below, from the Te Henui Cemetery garden in New Plymouth. As a garden designer I often check out gardens like this for ideas! Shout out to the volunteers and staff who tend this garden gem. Starring this month are maple trees, chrysanthemums, and Mexican feather grass, backed by the stately evergreen yews and Kauri trees.

Most New Plymouth gardens have a small area that is easily transformed with a bit of colour and structure. Here are a few ideas. The bronze leaf begonias and pink New Guinea Impatiens have bloomed for months in dappled shade. A pittosporum in a tall pot graces a narrow spot by the garage. A narrow hedge of boxed Abelia grandiflora pairs well with Corten Steel garden ornaments.

A change of plants refreshed the entry to this home with texture and colour. In the before picture, the plants are too low and scruffy to feel welcoming. In the after photo, a palm and light green Pittosporums contrast nicely with the darker leafed H**es and Loropetalum. Varied heights also add interest, with taller plants flanking the doorway. I enjoy creating a whole new look for a garden, and this is a good example of doing so without costly structural changes. A couple of these plants will eventually outgrow the space and will be updated with smaller specimens. Everything grows so fast in Taranaki!

Big planting job for the end of the year included about 100 camellias for hedging and many ornamental shrubs at this new build site in New Plymouth. Nandinas and 3 Cercis 'Forest Pansy' trees are a nice combo; and the red leaved Loropetalums contrast well with the Podocarpus gracilior. I am working with Chris Paul on this one. Cercis 'forest pansy' are stunning small trees that look well in many types of gardens. In the last photo you can see how it looks in a more formal setting, where the red leaves pop against the white stones.

New Plymouth gardens usually have a spot above a retaining wall to plant. Here is one idea, lush and informal, with Jasmine growing up a fan shaped wire frame, a bonsai Monstera and fragrant Gardenias.

I've been working with Fitzroy Golf Club to improve the front gardens and look at these before & after photos of the progress so far! We had an epic workday on Sunday with a dozen club members removing tons of weeds and planting around 85 new native plants. I very much appreciate club President Neil Burge for seeing the vision and pulling together the massive team effort. I will post more photos soon.

Native plants to feature at Fitzroy Golf Club
Anyone planning a garden is smart to include a few NZ native plants, which are hardy and well suited for our climate. Here's a few for the new entry garden I’ve designed for Fitzroy Golf Club. Work on removing the weeds and preparing the site for planting begins soon. These plants are not only attractive, but they also help attract bees, birds and pollinators, so important for creating a healthy natural environment. Images: Kowhai, Libertia grandiflora, H**e Wiri mist, and Muehlenbeckia antonii (Shrubby Tororaro or Puhuehue). Can’t wait to see it all come together!

Looking for low maintenance greenery? Ferns and hostas make a graceful ground cover for a shady spot. Ferns also work well with other big round leafed plants, such as Bergenia, Heuchera, Philodendron, Begonias, and Ligularias; also H**es and shiny leaf coprosmas if you like NZ native plants. For a good plant design, I aim to fill a space lushly with complimentary plants, adding contrast with coloured foliage.

Garden lighting, a potted palm, and a new boxed bamboo hedge makes a nice frame for this relaxing patio space in Bell Block. The plants on the other side of the garden are filling in nicely, including Ligularia (tractor seat plants) and Chamaedorea microspadix (bamboo palm), a clumping palm that gives a lush tropical look.
