When traditional construction access isn’t an option, the solution needs to be designed around the environment - not the other way around.

As part of the Department of Conservation’s Great Walk upgrades, Monkeytoe designed and manufactured a lightweight, prefabricated aluminium bridge for the Aniwaniwa site, bound for Waiopaoa Hut on the Lake Waikaremoana Track.

The challenge? Dense native forest, uneven terrain and no practical access for traditional construction equipment.

The solution was a bridge engineered specifically for aerial installation - lightweight enough for helicopter transport, while still providing the strength and durability required for a high-use Great Walk environment.

The modular, corrosion-resistant design allowed the bridge to be transported and installed with minimal disruption, without the need for heavy machinery or large crews.

Engineering access at height: the One NZ Stadium project.

In 2019, Monkeytoe was engaged to solve a complex access and integration challenge at One New Zealand Stadium - designing systems to navigate the roof structure, support the video screens, and provide safe access throughout, all while working in step with a live, evolving build.

The result: a fully integrated access and support system built to move with a changing structure. Not a fixed, one-and-done design - a solution delivered through close, ongoing collaboration.

What we designed, engineered and delivered:

🔹 A network of gantry systems circulating the top of the stadium
🔹 Connecting walkways linking the gantries to the main support structures
🔹 Entry and egress ladder systems for safe access throughout
🔹 Structural support for the stadium's video screens
🔹 Height-safety systems for ongoing servicing of screens and technical equipment

These systems also carry the load and access requirements for the stadium's lighting and technical rigs — as functional as they are structural.

After more than 12 months of collaboration with the project team, fabrication is now underway on this complex external stair tower, with installation scheduled for October.

Working alongside the architects, engineers and Aoraki Construction, the design has evolved to overcome the unique challenges of attaching a 30-metre stair tower to the side of a 100-year-old building. Meeting seismic, wind and egress requirements demanded a carefully engineered solution, including a design that accommodates significant structural movement 30 metres above its base—all while integrating seamlessly with a heritage structure.

A great example of what can be achieved through strong collaboration, detailed engineering and careful planning. We’re looking forward to seeing this project come to life over the coming months.
