Not every kitchen is a simple box - and that’s where clever design comes in.

Standard off-the-shelf kitchens often force you into awkward compromises, like walking clear around a peninsula just to reach your dining table. When a space isn't standard, you need custom solutions.

For this transformation, we re-centered the cabinetry wall for visual alignment, opened up direct access to the dining area, and built a custom coffee nook tailored to the daily routine.

We completely fixed the worst layout mistake in this kitchen. 👇

You used to have to walk all the way around the outside of the kitchen just to get into the adjoining dining room.

The fix:
✨ Swapped the awkward peninsula for a smarter, functional design that leaves open access to the dining area.
✨ Re-centered the back wall of cabinetry for total visual balance.
✨ Built a dedicated custom coffee nook.
Design isn’t just about making things look good—it’s about how the space feels to live in every day.

A closer look at the details that make this kitchen work beautifully.

It’s all in the clever storage - from the pull-out pantry that keeps everything easy to see and access, to the corner LeMans unit making the most of an otherwise awkward space.

And one of our favourite practical details: the double rubbish bin drawer, keeping two bins neatly tucked away and right where you need them.

Beautiful on the outside, seriously functional on the inside. What’s your favourite practical kitchen solution?

A closer look at the finished kitchen.

After sharing the transformation last week, here’s a closer look at the finished space and the materials that bring the design together.

The dramatic black acrylic cabinetry on the back wall creates a strong focal point, paired with Snowdrift Naturale Melteca cabinetry throughout the rest of the kitchen.

The crisp White Ice engineered stone benchtops keep the space light and fresh, while the tiled splashback adds texture and works beautifully alongside the warmth of the natural timber ceiling and exposed beams.

To the back of the island, we added a Profile Panels Crete – Cliff Stone Beige feature panel, bringing a subtle earthy texture into the space and tying the different elements together.

Every detail was considered to create a kitchen that feels modern and sophisticated while still working beautifully within the character of the home.

From an original 1980s kitchen to a completely transformed space — we loved bringing our clients’ vision to life.

From original 1980s to modern dream home.

This transformation is a perfect example of what’s possible when you take a client’s vision and bring it to life.

The original kitchen was completely transformed with a sleek, modern design catered around a full wall of black cabinetry - creating a bold statement while providing plenty of practical storage.

A huge transformation, and one we absolutely loved bringing to life 🖤

From where we began to the finished result - what a transformation!

Tricky access? We’ll find a way.

This benchtop was never going to be an easy one to get into place. With difficult access to the property, we couldn’t simply carry it in the usual way.

So we called in a Hiab to lift the benchtop over the front deck… and that was only the beginning!

From there, we still had to carefully manoeuvre it through the house and into position.

These are the kinds of challenges we love at AJ’s Kitchens — tricky spaces, challenging access and builds that require a bit of creative thinking. We don’t just build kitchens; we work out how to make the difficult bits work too.

Because when the usual way won’t work, we find another way.
