Have you ever thought about what you will do if an electrical fire occurs and how you can stay prepared? 🔥

1. Never throw water over an electrical fire. Unplug the appliance or turn off the power if possible. 🚫💧

2. Smoother the fire in baking soda if the fire is small.

3. Call 111 if necessary and you can not put the fire out! 🚒

How to be prepared:

1. Check your fire extinguisher is suitable for an electrical fire by looking at the color of the band on the top of your extinguisher. Electrical fires are a class E fire, therefore you will need an extinguisher with either a white band or black band. 🧯

2. Install smoke detectors in your home and frequently check they are working.

Is your home child proofed?👣

If you have young children it is important that you properly child proof your electrical outlets, cords and appliances to keep your child safe.🔌

1. Put outlet caps and covers on all your outlets to ensure no objects are being stuck in there by your little one.
2. Pay attention to all your exposed cords and check there is no inner conduction wire exposed.
3. Place dangerous appliances out of reach. Especially appliances that produce heat, this includes: toasters, hair dryers/straighteners, microwaves etc.

Are you overloading your outlets? 🔌
Plugging too many appliance and devices into one outlet can potentially cause a fire. 🔥
To prevent this, make sure you spread your appliance out between different outlets!

Do you have RCD protection installed on your switchboard?
RCD protection has only become mandatory in 2003, therefore, a lot of homes built before 2003 most likely won’t have RCD protection installed.👎🏼
RCD protection is designed to prevent a fatal electrical shock from the switch board. ⚡️
In our opinion RCD protection is definitely worth it so make sure to contact your electrician to get more information! 📞

Are the faceplates on your outlets feeling hot? 🔥
Faceplates are the covers that fit on the outlet and switches. If you’re faceplates are hot to the touch it’s important to take immediate action. 📞
This is a electrical issue of either loose wires or you’ve overloaded your outlet with too many appliances, this could result in an electrical fire.
You’re next step is to turn off the power to that outlet from the circuit breaker board and get in contact with your electrician ⚡️

Do you have flickering lights?💡

If your light is flickering when turning on or just not turning on at all, it could indicate a problem with the wiring, switch, light fixture, or bulb. 👎🏼
Your next step would be replacing the light bulb, if that doesn’t fix the flickering you will need an electrician to come to your home to test the wiring, switch and fixture. 📞💡
