Big rigs. Big smiles. 🚛😊

Last Sunday 30 August, some of the Whitestone fleet joined the annual Special Rigs for Special Kids convoy in Dunedin, helping create a memorable day for children with special needs and their families.

A huge thank you to our drivers, the organising committee, volunteers and sponsors who make this incredible community event happen each year.

And thanks to Emma Kay for the video footage capturing our fleet in action.

The tools we carry aren't always in the back of a ute.

Andy Nunn from our Dunedin team recently took part in First Aid training, proving that developing skills and knowledge is just as important as the work we do on site every day.

What a fantastic day! 🙌

Last Friday, we welcomed industry partners, stakeholders and guests to our Whitestone Contracting Industry Open Day at our Main Depot in Oamaru.

The day was all about showcasing who we are, what we do, and the people behind the projects that help build and maintain the infrastructure our communities rely on. From hands-on demonstrations to conversations about careers and pathways into civil construction, it was a great opportunity to connect, share knowledge and celebrate our industry.

A huge thank you to our industry partners – Oamaru Pacific Island Community Group - OPICG Inc , Connexis , and Otago Polytechnic and Waitaki Mayors Taskforce – for joining us and helping showcase the many opportunities and pathways available within our industry.

We were also fortunate to have the support of Advance Landscape Systems and Easy Big Trees , who donated native plants and trees for the day. Their contribution provided a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about the landscaping arm of our industry and the important role it plays in creating sustainable, connected communities.

Thank you to The Rural Fire team for generously sharing their space with us and helping make the day possible.

We were also honoured to welcome a number of special guests, including the Mayor of Waitaki, elected members, Hon. Mike Butterick, and members of our Board of Directors. Thank you for taking the time to join us, support the event, and learn more about the work our team delivers across the region.

We are incredibly grateful to our spot prize sponsors Road Materials Workgear and Dunedin City Motors, as well as Roadsigns & Traffic Control Equipment Ltd - RTL, who generously donated our major prizes. Your support helped make the day even more memorable for our attendees.

Finally, a massive thank you to our Whitestone Contracting team. From the planning and preparation behind the scenes to the demonstrations, conversations and learning opportunities throughout the day, your passion, professionalism and willingness to share your knowledge truly brought the event to life. You represented Whitestone brilliantly and helped inspire the next generation of our industry.

Thank you to everyone who came along – we loved having you with us and look forward to doing it again.

Remembering Cr. Jim Hopkins

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Cr. Jim Hopkins earlier this week.

Jim was a dedicated servant of the Waitaki community and a respected member of the Waitaki District Council. Through his role as a Councillor, Jim was also part of the shareholder family that supports Whitestone Contracting, and his contribution to our organisation and our wider community will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

Jim always offered detailed critique and often asked the hard questions around a wide range of topics associated with the operation of Whitestone Contracting. This constructive challenging assisted with improving the operation of Whitestone.

We are grateful for Jim’s support, guidance, and contribution to Whitestone’s journey. His impact will continue to be felt through the community he cared so deeply about and the legacy he leaves behind.

Our thoughts are with Jim’s family, friends, fellow Councillors, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

From the Board, Management and Staff of Whitestone, rest in peace, Jim. Thank you for your service to Waitaki.

Thinking about a career in civil construction?

We're at the Otago Polytechnic Employment Expo today, showcasing what we do at Whitestone Contracting and the exciting career pathways available in our industry.

Whether you're exploring your next step, looking for hands-on work, or simply curious about the opportunities in civil construction, we'd love to have a chat.

Come down and say hello to Ian Mann and Steve O'Kane from our Dunedin team with Barbara Finch and Shannon Halalele from Oamaru. They're ready to answer your questions and share what it's like to be part of the Whitestone crew.

See you there!

✨ Welcome to the Whitestone Street Sweeper Fan Club, MacKenzie and Felix! ✨

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming the newest official members of our Whitestone Contracting Limited Street Sweeper Fan Club — 4-year-old twins Mackenzie and Felix!

For some time now, these two have been big fans of our street sweeper, always watching from afar and giving the biggest waves and smiles to our operator Shane Mahon as he’s out keeping our streets looking their best.

So, we invited them along to our Deborah site for a special up-close tour of the sweeper they’ve admired so much. They got to see the machine in action, learn more about what Shane does, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the work that keeps our community moving.

Thanks to SweepTech Ltd, Mackenzie and Felix were proudly awarded their very own Sweeptech caps and torches, along with Whitestone hi-vis vests and official certificates welcoming them into the fan club.

A special mention also goes to MacKenzie — who made history as the very first princess to visit the Whitestone yard, arriving in true princess style in her beautiful pink dress!

Thanks to Mum Chelsea for bringing them along and sharing their excitement with us.

It’s always awesome to see the next generation showing an interest in the work we do — and we’re pretty sure Shane has gained two lifelong supporters of the sweeper crew!

A great night celebrating the people and projects that make our civil construction industry so impressive at the Civil Contractors New Zealand Otago Hynds Awards held at the Dunedin Town Hall on Friday 17 July.

We were proud to have our team represented on the night, with Tyler Simpson, Reuben Burridge, Michael Harrison (Waitaki District Council), Julian Hardy, Bruce Muldrew, Shannon Dunnett, Chris Scott, Billy Wilson, Callan Brash and Cameron Bullin attending as our Kakanui Bridge Replacement project was a finalist in Category C: Projects valued between $1 million and $5 million.

Delivered as a subcontractor to Concrete Structures NZ Ltd, the Kakanui Bridge Replacement project showcased the skill, teamwork and commitment of everyone involved. While we didn’t take home the award this time, being recognised amongst some of the region’s outstanding projects is something our team can be incredibly proud of.

A huge congratulations to all the winners and finalists on the night. It was fantastic to celebrate the mahi, innovation and dedication of so many talented people across Otago’s civil construction sector.

Thank you to CCNZ Otago for another great event celebrating our industry and the people behind the projects. 👏
