Can you live in your house during a renovation?
The answer is usually: “It depends.”
A kitchen renovation? Often yes.
A bathroom renovation? Usually, as long as you have another bathroom available.
An extension? Quite often.
A whole-house renovation? That’s where things start getting interesting.
The biggest surprises aren’t usually the building work itself.
It’s the day-to-day disruptions people don’t think about beforehand:
• Dust finding its way into places you didn’t know existed.
• Power being switched off.
• Water interruptions.
• Constant noise.
• Trying to work from home while tools are running.
Then add young kids, pets, or school routines into the mix, and the experience can feel very different from what people imagined.
We’ve seen clients successfully stay in their homes throughout renovations.
We’ve also seen projects where moving out temporarily made life much easier for everyone involved.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
The best approach depends on the size and complexity of the project, your family situation, and how much disruption you’re willing to tolerate.
One question we always recommend asking your builder is:
“If this were your house, would you stay here during the renovation?”
The answer can tell you a lot.
Have you lived through a renovation before?
Would you do it the same way again?
