You're not imagining it.

Heaters worked harder.
Dehumidifiers and dryers got more use.
Heaters ran 24/7.
Hot water demand went up.
Because nobody wants to sit around in a cold house to save a few dollars.

If your energy use has changed more than you'd expect, it can be worth looking at whether your heating and electrical systems are operating efficiently, and whether it's worth having that conversation about smart systems or solar...

Reality?
You still leave every light on while looking for your phone....

The good news is that small upgrades really do add up over time - and efficient lighting is one of the easiest wins around the home.

Now if only someone could invent a light that turns itself off after teenagers leave the room...

Heating solutions are great in the house, but they aren't as effective if you are on the wrong plan...

Not all power plans suit all households. If you work from home and use most of your power during the day, a plan built around cheap night rates won't do you any favours. Worth a five-minute check of your actual usage pattern against your plan once a year - winter's a good time to notice, since your bill's front and centre anyway.

WHY DOES MY BREAKER KEEP TRIPPING?

Winter is peak season for this one. The heater's running, the jug's boiling, someone's using the hair dryer... and suddenly the lights go out.

Often it's simply an overloaded circuit - too many high-powered appliances running on the same breaker at once. But if your breaker keeps tripping without an obvious cause, it could be a sign of a fault that needs professional attention.

Resetting it once is one thing.
Resetting it every few days isn't a long-term solution.

If it's happening regularly, it's worth having one of our team take a proper look.

Switchboards deserve one too, especially older homes still running on original fuses rather than modern safety switches.

Winter puts more strain on the whole system - heaters, heat pumps, hot water all cranking at once - so it's a sensible time to make sure the board behind it all is actually up to the job, not just quietly coping.

We'll be honest - your hot water cylinder might be quietly judging you..

Hot water is usually the second-biggest power user in the house after heating, and most cylinders run flat out 24/7 whether anyone's home or not...

A cylinder wrap (if it doesn't already have good insulation), a timer so it's not heating water at 3am for nobody, and a thermostat check (around 60°C is the sweet spot - hot enough to be safe, not hot enough to waste money) are three cheap wins most homes haven't done.

Every flatting group chat in the country has had this argument...

The commonly recommended range for living areas in winter sits around 18–21°C, with bedrooms comfortable a touch cooler. Every degree above that can noticeably increase running costs, since the heat pump has to work harder to hold a higher target against the cold outside...

Set it, leave it, and let it do its job steadily rather than cranking it up and down all evening - that constant on/off is what really burns power.
