Here's another one to help you this winter - "heat the person - not the house".

Many households will heat the whole house when they're only in one or two rooms. However, if you're spending the evening in the lounge, you don't need the bedroom wing at 20Β°C.

The fix:
βœ… Close doors to rooms you're not using
βœ… Use draught stoppers on gaps under doors
βœ… Run a single well-placed heat pump rather than multiple heaters
βœ… Set up a timer for any heating in bedrooms (for example 30 minutes before you head to bed)
βœ… Consider zone heating systems for larger homes

Zoning your heating to save and keep everyone comfy. Bit of a game-changer this winter πŸ”₯⚽

It's a question we get asked a lot: "Do heat pumps actually save money? or are they just another heat source like all the others in the market?"
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: also yes, but only if they're the right size, properly installed, and you're using them correctly.

Heat pumps work by moving heat rather than generating it - which makes them 3–4x more energy-efficient than a standard electric heater.

Translation: for every $1 of electricity you put in, you can get $3–$4 of heat out.

Compare that to a plug-in column heater (ratio of roughly 1:1) and the maths becomes pretty compelling.

The key is making sure your unit suits your space. Too small = working overtime. Too big = short cycling and inefficiency.

Winter has a way of exposing poor lighting - when it's dark before dinner and gloomy for much of the day, good lighting becomes much more noticeable...

The right lighting can make a home feel warmer, brighter, safer, and more inviting.
If you've been putting up with dark corners, outdated fittings, or poorly lit outdoor areas, now might be the perfect time to make a few improvements.

Which room in your house could use better lighting?

One of the biggest myths we hear is that solar only works on bright summer days.
While production is naturally lower during winter, solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days and continue helping reduce power costs throughout the year.
Even on cloudy winter days, your system is still working away in the background.

That first winter power bill can be a bit of a shock to the system πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Once the heat pump is running most of the day, the dryer is working overtime, and everyone's reaching for the electric blanket, it's no surprise power use climbs through winter.

Good news - there are often small changes that can help reduce unnecessary power use without turning your house into an icebox.

If you've noticed your power bill creeping up faster than expected, it could be worth looking at how efficiently your home is running. After all, winter is cold enough without sitting around in a beanie and three jerseys.

What's the biggest power user in your house during winter?

Your fridge and freezer run 24/7, 365 days a year.
So how efficiently they operate matters - a lot! 🧊

Here are some quick wins for keeping your cold appliances from heating up your power bill:

❄️ Check the door seals - close a piece of paper in the door. If it slides out easily, the seal is worn and cold air is leaking constantly. Replacement seals are cheap.
❄️ Set the temperature correctly - fridge at 3-4Β°C, freezer at -18Β°C. Colder than this wastes energy with no extra food safety benefit.
❄️ Let hot food cool before refrigerating - putting hot food straight in the fridge forces the compressor to work overtime.
❄️ Keep your fridge well-stocked but not overcrowded - a full fridge retains cold better than an empty one, but airflow needs to circulate.
❄️ Defrost your freezer regularly - ice buildup acts as insulation between the freezer coils and the food, forcing the unit to work harder.
❄️ Turn off your second fridge or garage beer fridge - this single action can reduce electricity demand by up to 8% and save around $200/year.

That last one is the big one. If the garage fridge has a dozen beers and some leftovers in it, it's costing you significantly more than those items are worth to keep cold.

Any questions about your home appliances and their power consumption? Our team can help you work out where you're losing money.
