With spring well in force you'll know that now is the best time to hydroseed if you are wanting to refurbish your lawn.

A common topic I hear a lot is, birds affecting how even the strike is. It's easy to assume they are causing issues, there's usually a flock of them!

I have given the theory a little thought and need to put a stop to that old chestnut.

Typical contractor seed mix has around 250,000 seeds per kg. A little sparrow will eat around 3 grams a day. If you had 10 sparrows eating every day for 14 days that's 400 grams. Minimum application rates would see you putting down 4.5kg for 150m2. If you increase your application rate 8% you'll happily feed them.

Damage birds can do to a seeding lawn is more from digging around looking for insects. Hydroseeded lawns are more resistant to this as the seed is sealed and doesn't dry out when exposed.

The number one reason for an average strike when seeding a lawn is because of a lack of water. Hydroseeded lawns have a huge advantage over seeded lawns as the mulch acts as a wet blanket keeping things damn and warm.

Whilst automatic irrigation systems make life so much easier at keeping your lawn healthy, to the point it's essential, it can never give complete even coverage, without over watering a different area. You may have to manually water dryer spots for a couple of weeks while new grass gets established.

Hydroseeding going well in Tauranga!

This was 2 1/2 weeks after seeding. Credit to the owners, their watering regime is paying dividends.

New seed is hungry for nutrients, so it'll be due for another round of fertiliser in a couple of weeks and its first mow. Its important to just clip the top of the grass, keeping it long and mow frequently.

They say you can't seed in summer... We beg to differ... This property was hydroseeded in January 2020. We didn't have a summer in 2023 😔, you may remember 2020 summer was a scorcher!! Of course, it helps to have a sufficient irrigation system installed by us. This photo was only 5 days after hydroseeding!!

What is hydroseeding? In short it's like paper mache sprayed into the prepped soil.

The reason hydroseeding is so successful is because the seed is sealed in the paper/woodfibre much which does a brilliant job at retaining moisture. Combine that with fertiliser, glue and other secret ingredients, you have a really good growing medium for the seed.

We also include a pre-emergent herbicide in our mulch mix to keep those w**ds at bay! With such a good growing medium, those dormant w**d seeds are raring to go. With out it w**d control is a must at 3 months and then again at 6 months.

Did i mention we didn't have a summer in 2023? So much rain fall! One of hydroseeding's weakness's is heavy rain. The mulch loosens and washes away. Because of how wet that dreaded summer was, it really pushed me to develop hydroseeding to be able to resist heavy rain. I could be wrong, but i believe we are the first, and only, to be able to offer special glues that will resists a heavy down pour. For a fraction more cost it really is good insurance to protect your new lawn from an unplanned weather event.

Do you have a dog and does your lawn have dead patches?

We see this problem so many times! We get so many questions from people looking for ways to fix the issue and I have seen so many mis guided truths. Hopefully this post will help clarify some of those questions and get you to a healthy, lush lawn.

Love our pets, hate what they can do... Most of us know the problems, some have been mis lead to the actual cause, and a lot think there is no remedy, apart from getting rid of the beloved pet or training it to go elsewhere. I'll be the first to admit I have not tried this method first hand - I don’t have a dog. As Lawns are a large part of what we do, I have done a heap or research on why, how, and who - not all dogs are equal, but they can all damage your beautiful lawn. I have studied the dogs that do cause damage and the ones that don't. There is no difference in s*x of dog, size of the dog or breed in regard to the damage they do to lawns.

Why does the urine kill the grass?

Some believe it is because of acid or extreme pH swings. This is not true. If there are any pH swings, it's not detrimental to the lawn. What is actually happening is the dog’s urine has a heavy load of urea - nitrogen. This overload of nitrogen kills the grass. It doesn't burn it as such, like we all say, it staves it of any moisture and any ability to take on moisture. Given grass is mostly moisture it doesn't take long to die off.

How to identify?

Typically, you will see a dark green ring around the outside of the dead patch. This is where the nitrogen has diluted. That said, it's not always the case. Grass that has been killed by urine still has a strong root structure, unlike a fungus or a grub issue. If you do a tug test on the grass it will be resistant in pulling out. If it's a fungal or grub issue the grass root system is weak and will break with ease.

What can you do? Apart from training your dog to go elsewhere or keeping it off the lawn.

Dilute the urine – Not a sustainable fix, however if you can water the urine patch before it dries out then you will dilute the nitrogen level. There is a possibility that this could cause dark green patches with excessive growth, when comparing to the rest of the lawn.

Hydration - Have lots of water stations around the place and do what you can to encourage drinking. A good method is a bone broth that is salt free. Maybe add water to the dog food and feed hydration rich fruits like watermelon etc.

Diet- Dried food and dog rolls are high in processed proteins. Urea is a byproduct of breaking down the proteins. The harder it is to break down the higher the concentration of urea. Avoid those foods if you can. Use fresh meat that is fully hydrated - as in wet. I know it's expensive, but if you think outside the box a little you can come up with ways to bring the cost down. Feed more plant-based foods, these break down really easily, meaning less urea. Your dog needs a protein diet, but it doesn't have to come all from meat. There are plenty of plant-based foods that are high in protein. Fresh meat combined with a protein plant food will be really beneficial and your dog will break down those proteins much easier.

Less fertilizer on your lawn - If your lawn is well fed, having an additional overload of nitrogen is too much of a good thing. You could try fertilise a smaller amount but more often.

We at Rapid Lawn do not advocate the use of vinegar in the water or the use of supplements. If you chose to use these then advice from your vet is recommended.

Dog Rocks – Im not sure I have heard anyone say they work, perhaps its up for debate. The idea is it’s a volcanic rock which you add to the drinking bowl. Manufacture's claim it purifies the water and reduces the nitrogen level.

I hope this post gets the reach it deserves. This question is raised so many times and if we can educate those who believe you cant have a nice lawn if you have a dog, then we are all winning.

There is definitely a love hate relationship with Kikuyu! Its almost frowned apon when I meet clients and discuss their needs. Love it or hate it, there is a place.

This lawn is about 4 years old. It's hasn't had any maintenance through its life, and it was showing. Full of w**ds, regularly left to get long and then mowed short. It was a typical papamoa lawn. I decided I needed to show it some love and the results are amazing, for minimal work.

First up was a fertilize at the end of October. This premoted the w**ds to grow. A week later I applied 2.4d and diclamba. I knew this would give the kikuyu a hard time, however it did a great job at removing much every W**d or foreign grass, including onehunga w**d and clover. A couple of weeks later it was time to scalp the kikuyu. Ideally I would have mowed it to the soil but my mower wouldn't get that low. Don't be scared of how much abuse you can give this grass, as you can see it just bounces back in no time! Regular mowing, more fertilizer and a water maybe once a week.

Kikuyu does need to be mowed a couple of times a week through the grow season. This not only stimulates root growth but trains the runner to stay lower and produce more leaf growth.
