Plumbing emergencies never pick a convenient time. A burst pipe, leaking hot water cylinder or blocked toilet can leave you with a real mess on your hands.

A while ago while unblocking a drain, I had a special moment when I discovered this little hedgehog stuck in a gully trap when unblocking a drain. I carefully plucked him out and let him dry in the sun before he scuttled away, none the worse for the experience.

1. Turn off your main water supply
If you've got a burst pipe or serious leak, turn off the main water supply if it's safe to do so.

2. If you smell gas
If it's safe to do so, turn off appliances the gas supply at the LPG bottle and open doors and windows to ventilate the area.

Is it time to upgrade your hot water system?

There are more options than ever when it comes to hot water, and choosing the right one isn't always straightforward.

Gas, electric or heat pump? Which system is right for your home?

🔥Gas continuous flow
One of the most popular options, especially out here on the beach.

Gas bottles are stored outside and are easy to replace when they run out. The unit is compact, giving you more cupboard space inside, and because the water is heated as you need it, you don't have to worry about running out.

The setup cost is a little higher than a standard cylinder, but you only heat water when you need it.

⚡Electric hot water cylinder
A tried-and-tested option with a lower upfront cost and a range of cylinder sizes.

The cylinder heats and stores a set amount of hot water, so you can run out if there's high demand, such as having a house full of guests.

Cylinders can be installed inside or outside, but here at the beach, salt air and rust can cause issues with outdoor cylinders. Our general recommendation is to have them installed inside where possible.

🍃Heat pump hot water
A heat pump works a bit like a refrigerator in reverse. It moves existing heat rather than generating it from scratch, so it can use around three to four times less electricity than a standard electric water heater.

Like an electric cylinder, it stores hot water, so you can still run out with high demand. The difference is that it uses much less electricity and can reheat the cylinder as needed.

The setup cost is higher, but lower running costs can make it a good long-term option. It also needs suitable outdoor space for the heat pump unit.

There isn't one option that's best for every home. The right choice depends on your household, existing setup, energy use and budget.

This upstairs shower had seen better days. A slow leak had started rotting the floor underneath.

We pulled out the old shower, replaced the flooring, updated the plumbing and mixer, and fitted a fresh new shower in its place.

All sorted and good to go.

💧 Do you need more taps outside?

Spring is almost here, the sun is out and it’s time to start spending more time in the garden, at the beach and out enjoying the warmer weather.

If you’ve been dragging a huge hose around the property, fighting the kinks, or negotiating with your two-year-old for a turn with the water, a couple of well-placed outdoor taps can make life a whole lot easier.
