That scary question, do I take the leap? 😳The side hustle, has it's benefits:
Not entirely commiting yourself to a full time business
Falling back on your secure job
A bit of extra cash.

Sure - great place to start.
But when do you know you'll be ready?

Don't worry, I was there too, I was PETRIFIED, to leap. After the first redundancy, I wasn't in the right mindframe. But the second? It lit a fire, something switched, it wasn't even a decision I can pinpoint happening. It just did. The support of friends and family firmly in place, I was off.

I've always had some kind of side hustle. 👯‍♀️ My sister and I started a business just out of school. She was the photographer and I was the makeup artist. Together we shot family portraits together at my mum's home (she had those beautiful floaty sheer curtains that just MAKE a shot in the early 2000's).

From there, I was a freelance makeup artist (on top of a full time job), weddings galore for many of my friends, weekend work and I loved it!

But I was always creating logo's for friends, a poster for a family member, and as I'm typing this, I'm realising we were entrepreneurs from the start... we can thank our mum and dad for our work ethic.

SASS Social was born after helping multiple friends with their social media & branding. People knew they had to be active on socials, yet they didn't know where to start.

This little side hustle of mine built up over a good 2 years.

Late nights, easily 3-4 times per week. Challenging clients, I said yes to everything because I didn't think I could afford to say no.

I spend a lot of time teaching social media. But a few weeks ago, I became a student again!
Off I went see Katie from PeopleInk to learn more about LinkedIn in her Pukekohe workshop.

Although it is a platform I've used across clients before, this time I was there in a Sass Social capacity, utilising it for my own business. And I have to be honest, it did take a while to shift my brain to BE the client. 🤯

A great set of women showed up, and we got stuck in, asking questions, tailoring content, and picking up key tricks to help connect with others on the platform.

And just like Instagram or Facebook, consistency is of course key, making sure you take the time to engage with others and tell your own story.

It's quite amazing who you'll connect with along the way too! (I've already had a few blast from the past pop up!)

Cup full! 😍

Running a business everyday is incredible, however some days it takes its toll. Today started off like that, but ended with a pep in my step and a smile on my dial.

And chatting with these incredible women helped. Within minutes we were laughing, exchanging ideas and boosting each other up. Thank you for that ladies!

So my advice from today is, find your support network and lean on them when those days pop up!

GET IN THE BIN!! No more! ⛔

Turns out the same thing that got me out of a 9 to 5 is the same thing that makes me want to bin bad internet advice.

Low tolerance for 'that's just how it's done.'

So welcome to my new series called ‘Get in the Bin’, courtesy of my mate Ashlee (you know who you are), who says it almost daily and I’m claiming it as my own.

Things that can get in the bin Vol 1:

🙅‍♀️ No.1 Links in Instagram comments... STOP. They don’t belong there.
🙅‍♀️ No.2 The ‘Kinda Chic' trend. Been there done that, let’s move on. You don’t have to do every trend…
🙅‍♀️ No.3 Poorly sized Instagram imagery, if you want to know the newest portrait size, just ask.
🙅‍♀️ No.4 Logo's everywhere. This is not an AD.

Crushed. 😔 To put it simply. The moment the piece of paper was put into my hand I felt... lost.

How I looked at myself and what I thought I was actually good at instantly changed. A full identity shift I guess.

It's something you can anticipate and still never really be ready for.

I didn't know it yet, but it was also something that would gently nudge (ok no, booted my ass) toward a life I'd only ever let myself dream about. My side hustle, turning to a full time gig.

My own boss.

My own choices.

My responsibility.

MINE.

The 9-5pm really frustrates me. It's all I was taught in school, it was the only option.

How lucky are we now to live in a world where this is now a very real possibility (and SO many of us are already doing it already).

I've had many jobs in my short life.

And with the benefit of hindsight, I see I totally drifted.

But now that I work for myself. Now that I run my own schedule. Now that the responsibility is ALL on me? WOULD NOT TRADE IT.

And with the big R word everywhere.

With so many loosing their jobs, and so much extra stress in this world.

IF you could do anything?

IF you could create something, a business, a different life... would you?
