Most new heat pumps now come with Wi-Fi and an app, and it’s one of those things people end up using every day.

Heading home on a warm afternoon? Turn your heat pump on from the car, and the house is comfortable when you walk in. Left it running when you went out? Switch it off from wherever you are.

The apps also show how much power your heat pump is using. That makes it easier to spot where you can save.

The same goes for hot water. It makes up about a third of the power the average Kiwi home uses, so it’s worth keeping an eye on. Some hot water heat pumps let you check and adjust your hot water from the same phone.

Big home or small space, fresh air for all

Small units, tight spaces

Did you know some of today's heat pumps are compact enough to fit above a doorway?

For rooms where wall space is limited, like a nursery, home office, or smaller bedroom, there are options built specifically for tight spots. The Carrier Ambi and the Mitsubishi AP Mini are two good examples. Both have a slim profile designed to sit above a door, so you get comfort in the room without giving up wall space.

Single room or whole home, what's the difference?

Did you know heat pumps come in a few different setups depending on what you need?

A split system is a single indoor unit paired with an outdoor unit, heating or cooling one room. It's a straightforward option if you're focused on the spaces you use most, like the lounge, study or bedroom.

If you want more coverage, a multi system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit, so you can heat or cool a few rooms independently. Ducted systems go a step further again, with a network of ducting delivering climate control throughout the whole home from one central unit, controlled from a single point.

Which one makes sense really comes down to how many rooms you want covered and how the home is laid out.

How does a heat pump actually work?

Did you know a heat pump does't actually create heat, it moves it? Traditional heaters, whether gas or electric work by generating heat from scratch, which takes a lot of energy. A heat pump takes a different approach. It draws existing warmth from the outdoor air, even on cool days, and it moves it inside. In summer it works the other way, moving heat out to cool. your home down.

Because it's moving heat rather than making it, a heat pump uses a lot less electricity to do the same job which is why it costs so much less to run.
