Water ingress is one of the biggest risks to a building’s long-term value, comfort and durability. In New Zealand, the estimated cost of leaky building repairs has reached as high as $47 billion.💧

Creating multiple layers of defense against the elements ensures that the building will remain weathertight for 50 years or more. With airtight construction and cladding profile changes, there’s no natural wind to dry out walls and cavities, which is great for improving internal comfort and energy efficiency, but it also means the cladding and weathertight systems needs to work much better than before.

A little behind the scenes at blower door testing onsite 💨

A blower door test uses a powerful fan which is fitted into the doorway changing the air pressure inside the house. We test under both positive and negative pressure, pushing air in and drawing it out to simulate how the home will perform under different conditions.

This helps us find any spots where air is sneaking through, like around windows, doors and other junctions.

Airtightness is key to building a high performance home. Uncontrolled air leakage can lead to heat loss, draughts, higher energy use and moisture entering places it shouldn’t.

We do this while the home is still under construction, so leaks can be found and fixed while they are still accessible. It’s one of the ways we check the home is performing as intended, not just on paper, but in practice.

Keep Winter Outside

For this project, we’ve used Terralana inside the airtightness layer (service cavity and internal wall sound insulation) for a healthy internal environment. Knauf Earthwool insulation products outside the airtight layer in the walls (R4.1) and ceilings (R10+) to do the heavy lifting, insulating both the home and the garage.

Quality insulation makes a huge difference to a home’s thermal performance, comfort, and acoustic performance. Once it’s covered up, you’ll never see it again - but you’ll notice the difference every day, in every season.

Bones of the Build | Framing Part 1

Every timber component of our framing has a role to play and with a focus on the best possible outcomes across a range of factors it requires a refined combination of products and know how. Our framing recipe allows us to ensure a structurally sound and solid frame, excellent dimensional accuracy, whilst also maximising the insulation cavity between studs therefore helping the building perform better thermally.
