As the lead Landscape Architect, it is very rewarding to be part of the bridge design team that developed the opportunities to create a design that achieves outcome that is more than just a bridge! The design incorporates cultural design elements within the structure and abutments, while providing connectivity, plus incorporates public open spaces and forms a new 'gateway' that positively contributes to the character of Waikato River and Hamilton.
Being intimately involved in the design and delivery of a large infrastructure project provided excellent opportunities to develop and set strong urban design objectives from the onset (some 8 years ago), to achieve outstanding design outcomes. The project incorporates ecological street planting and wetlands with extensive native revegetation that provides continuous wildlife corridors. This is combined with open spaces, pa harakeke (national flax weaving collection), recreational opportunities as well as creating ecological habitat that contributes to the aesthetic value of the area and future residential development.
As project landscape architect, my role is about identifying and coordinating cultural design opportunities within the project, while developing close working relationship(s) with the cultural designer (Eugene Kara) to allow iwi the space for expression and connection with the landscape. This has resulted in enduring cultural design outcomes that adds additional 'richness' to the project.
