Wiping condensation off the inside of your windows this winter?

It is so common in New Zealand homes that we have come to treat it as normal. But that water sitting on the glass is a sign the home is holding more moisture than it can clear, and where there is steady moisture, mould and that damp, musty feeling are rarely far behind.

A home built to high performance principles deals with this differently. A mechanical heat recovery ventilation system brings in constant fresh, filtered air and keeps humidity in check, whilst recovering heat from the stale air being expelled. At the same time high performance windows and an airtight, well-insulated envelope keep surfaces warm enough that moisture does not condense in the first place.

The result is a home that stays dry right through winter. No wiping down windowsills, no mould creeping into the corners, and air that feels fresh rather than stuffy.

A dry home is a healthier home, and a more durable one.

With the recent graduation of two of our Apprentices to Qualified Builder it is also a good time to thank all of our team, especially our Site Supervisors for dedicating time and patience to teaching our Apprentices and the oversight of their work. It takes a village, and we are proud of the team work and shared values demonstrated by all in this important part of our work.

Zach Goldsmith has a new certificate to add to the 'pool room' .... he is now a Fully Qualified Builder! Zach has such a great attitude so we are stoked to see him qualify after all his hard work. Well done 👏👏👏👏

Well done Cam! Another apprenticeship completed and another qualified builder on site! Its not only the work learnt and overseen on site, apprentices must complete a large amount of book work outside of work hours. It is always a huge accomplishment with a large amount of effort required. We are stoked for you and loved the big grin when you officially found out you had it in the bag!

We’re incredibly proud of Zach and the contribution his NZ Apprentice Challenge project is now having in the community.

As part of the challenge, Zach built a pataka (food storage cupboard), and after the competition he was able to donate it to an organisation that would benefit from it. Last week, Zach presented the pataka to Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Whānau Tahi in Christchurch, a special place for him, as his cousins attend there.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Whānau Tahi is dedicated to revitalising and nurturing the Māori language while providing children with a warm, secure environment where parents and whānau work together and are actively involved in daily learning and operations.

The kōhanga also has a strong garden-to-table focus and previously had no outdoor storage space for kai (food) for whānau to take home. Zach’s pataka will now help support this important part of their community.

It’s fantastic to see the skills and effort from the Apprentice Challenge creating something meaningful beyond the competition itself. Well done Zach!

Another site supervisor achieving his NZ Certificate in Construction Trade Supervision from BCITO. It takes perseverance to get this one over the line which is why many Site Supervisors don't finish it.

One of our favourite things about these Mid Build Events is being able to show the parts of a home that are usually hidden forever.

On Thursday 11th June, we’re opening up another Christchurch high performance home built to Passive House principles before the internal linings are installed, giving you the chance to see all the details and systems that make the biggest difference to comfort, health, and energy efficiency.

As always, you’ll get to see things like:

✔ Insulation and thermal bridge management
✔ Mechanical fresh air ventilation systems
✔ The craftsmanship and planning behind a high-performance build

CAN YOU HAVE A PASSIVE HOUSE WITH AN INDOOR FIRE?

You certainly don’t need one for heating, and you can’t just install any fire, so it is not a common addition, but for those who want one there are a few approved options available.

For our clients, an indoor fire (Passive House approved) was a non-negotiable, adding ambience to their lounge. While it’s not needed for warmth, it has been carefully selected to work with the home’s airtight design, without compromising Passive House performance.
