Let's welcome Pumpkin ‘Triamble’!
Pumpkin ‘Triamble’ is a traditional storage pumpkin that produces medium-large, three-lobed, blue-grey pumpkins on vigorous trailing vines, with thick, dense, dry orange flesh and a rich, sweet, nutty flavour, ideal for roasting, baking, mashing, soups, stews, and long-term storage.
Triamble originates from Australia, with its earliest documented commercial listing dating to 1918, when it was described as “a very popular variety”. This shows that the variety was already well established by this time, although its exact date of origin is unknown.
It was being grown and sold commercially in New Zealand by the early 1930s and by the 1940s was established as a valued variety for home gardeners and recognised as an excellent keeping variety.
These seeds were kindly given to me by Louise Shaw at Louise Shaw in Whakatāne. I’ll be planting Triamble in the seed garden this year to develop the line, adapt it to our western Bay of Plenty conditions, and continue its journey as another seed saver caring for and preserving this special variety.
I’ll also be offering Pumpkin Triamble seedlings from October to November once the soil has warmed sufficiently to support healthy root growth.
They take approximately 160 days to reach maturity, so planting in mid to late spring gives the plants a long growing season to fully mature their fruit before cooler conditions arrive and powdery mildew becomes more prevalent towards the end of summer.
