What's new this weekend 🌱

This Saturday at the Tauranga Farmers Market, I’ll be introducing these new varieties to the spring collection:
• Straw Flower
• Spring Onions
• Bulbing Onions

Along with the usual spring veges:
• Beetroot

• Mizuna

As well as my hand made seed raising mix made from locally sourced materials!

Each week I’ll be bringing more and more varieties, with the warmer-season crops and seed packets starting to make an appearance towards the end of the month.

Who loves brussels sprouts? 🌱

Here is a beautiful harvest from Allan in Te Teko, who planted my brussels sprouts seedlings in autumn, grew them over winter, and has brought them to the Tauranga Farmers Market to sell alongside his vegetables this spring.

Getting good harvests is often about choosing the right variety for your climate and planting it at a suitable time of year. That’s why I only offer varieties that I know are easy to grow, early-maturing, high-yielding and well suited to our local conditions.

Brussels Sprouts ‘Long Island Improved’ is one of the varieties I grow for this reason. It is a reliable crop that performs well here, and produces a good spring harvest.

Big progress in the nursery 💦

I have finally set up an irrigation line to the greenhouse where I can water the seedlings with hose instead of pails and watering cans!

I definitely had moments of not feeling qualified for this, but hey, girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

The pressure is a bit too low to be able to use my rain wand, so I'll be setting up my little solar pump that was kindly gifted to me by Tikitere Farm.

In the meantime I can use a regular garden nozzle to give the seedling a good regular watering as we move into the warmer season!

I am back at the farmers market 🎉

After a good winter break, I will be back at the Tauranga Farmers Market this weekend & every weekend right through until June!

The seedling will look a little different this time round.. Instead of the usual plastic pots, this season the they will be wrapped in newspaper bundles.

Same good seedlings, even better packaging!

August marks the time when temperatures begin to rise ever so slightly, and a sure sign that the garden is about to come to life.

It’s the perfect time to plant more of your cool-loving crops, ready to replace those overwintered plants that will soon be going to seed.

I’ll have around 20 different vegetable varieties with me this weekend, so if you’re heading to the market, come by, have a browse, pick up some seedlings and say hello!

Don’t forget to w**d your gardens beforehand and bring a box to carry your seedings home in.

First market of the season 🌱

Tomorrow, Saturday the 1st of August, you can find me at the Tauranga Farmers Market with our Rooted & Rising Aotearoa July Seedling Boxes.

These mid-winter boxes are filled with lettuce, rocket, mizuna, tatsoi, miner's lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, land cress, and sweet peas, perfect for keeping your garden productive through the cooler months.

Whether you're looking to top up your winter garden or just to say hello and have a chat, I'd love to see you there and talk all things plants!

Farmers Market This Weekend 🌱

This Saturday, I'll be back at the Tauranga Farmers Market for a one-off appearance before returning on weekly basis from mid-to-late August onwards.

I'll be bringing along the excess seedlings from our Rooted & Rising Aotearoa July Seedling Boxes, each filled with a mix of vegetable, flower, and herb seedlings specially designed for mid-winter planting.

If you've been curious about the boxes, this is a great chance to give one a try without committing to an online order or subscription. They'll also keep you and your garden growing until I'm back at the market in a few weeks.

I'll have 10 Small Boxes (x10 seedlings) and 16 Medium Boxes (x20 seedlings) available, all packed up and ready to go.

I hope to see some familiar faces there!

Monthly Land Update 🌱

It's been a busy month here on the new section setting up the nursery, gardens, and home in preparation for the spring season.

The nursery has been the top priority, with propagation tables being built, seeds being sown, and seedlings making their way out to their new homes.

The seed garden has been partially covered with w**d mat, which is slowly turning the grass into bare soil before the first garden beds are created and planted in August and September.

The main irrigation line has now been run right through the paddock, so the next project is tapping into it and setting up an automatic watering system.

The soil mixing area is also taking shape, with locally sourced materials arriving to make the seed-raising mix I use in the nursery.

A chiller has also made its way into the paddock which will be for future food production!

My home area has been moved into its more permanent spot, where it gets plenty of sunshine and a little more privacy. Next on the list here is building a shelter over the top and creating food gardens all around it.

I'm going offline 🛜

I am very blessed to have minimal access to the internet out here on the new property.

As a grower, I sometimes feel torn between two worlds. One is a traditional way of being that I am most drawn to, and allows for more connection to nature. The other is a modern way of being that allows for more connection to people, but that I can get easily distracted by.

When too much focus is given either world, I can feel out of balance and try to make up for it by taking time away from myself.

So I am very grateful that this new space is mostly out of service, where I will be able to shift my attention to harmoniously caring for the land, to myself, and to others.

I will still be here, but just a little less active online and may take a bit longer to respond.
