Keep Safe and Warm Whanau 🚨

Update: Thu 22 Jan 11pm

State highways:

CLOSED
• SH35 Tolaga Bay to Pōtaka – Severe Weather
• SH2 Matawai to Te Karaka – Flooding and Slips

OPEN
• SH35 Okitu to Tolaga Bay
• SH35 Pōtaka to Ōpōtiki

All other state highways in the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions remain open.

While SH35 has reopened to Tolaga Bay, there are still numerous slips and debris, as well as surface flooding around – please avoid any unnecessary travel. If you have to drive, please do so with extreme caution and be alert for hazards.

The road will remain closed from Tolaga Bay north to Pōtaka as crews continue to assess damage from slips, flooding and debris.

----------------------------------------------------

🚧 SH35 CLOSING 9PM 🚧

SH35 will be closing at 9pm from Okitu through to Potaka, with the decision reviewed at 7am tomorrow. TEMO group controller Ben Green says the safety of the community is paramount, and keeping people off the roads in such dreadful weather is the best option. Emergency vehicles will still be able to get through should they need to.

UPDATE Jan 21 9.22am

‼️ RED AND ORANGE HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS ‼️

Mōrena whānau! Here we go.
MetService has issued a RED HEAVY RAIN WARNING for Tairāwhiti from Tolaga Bay north, and an ORANGE HEAVY RAIN WARNING for Tairāwhiti south of Tolaga Bay and Hawke’s Bay.
The RED warning is for the 26 hours from 9am this morning through to 11am Thursday. MetService say to expect a further 250-350mm of rain on top of what has already accumulated, with peak rates of 25-40mm/hr in downpours from late this evening. There is a threat to life from dangerous river conditions, significant flooding and slips. Conditions will disrupt travel, make some roads impassable and isolate communities.
DO NOT enter floodwaters and avoid travel. Act quickly to self-evacuate if you see rising water and be ready for power and communication outages.

The ORANGE HEAVY RAIN WARNING for Tairāwhiti south of Tolaga bay and Hawke’s Bay for the 24 hours from 10am this morning to 10am tomorrow (Thursday). Expect 100-150mm of rain with peak rates of 10-20mm/hr expected. There is a low chance of upgrading to a red warning.
Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. There will be surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions likely.
