Meet Nigel and Jacqui Chapman, the people behind RC Jamieson Builders.

When they’re not working on building and renovation projects around Christchurch, there’s a good chance you’ll find them somewhere outdoors.

Nigel is a keen mountain biker, while Jacqui prefers to cover the kilometres on foot. The Port Hills are a pretty good place for both!

RC Jamieson Builders has been part of Christchurch for many years, and Nigel and Jacqui are very much at the heart of the business. They’re local people, running a local building company, with a team that takes real pride in the work they do for Christchurch homeowners.

So, we thought it was time you met the people behind the name.

And yes, if you see these two in the Port Hills, Nigel will probably have the unfair advantage on the uphill sections.

The best bathroom isn't always the one with the most expensive fittings.

It's the one that works well every single day.

Good design isn't just about choosing colours that look nice together. It's about creating a space that's practical for your family, easy to maintain and comfortable to use for years to come.

Simple things such as better storage, improved lighting, a larger shower or a more practical layout often make a bigger difference than people expect.

That's why we spend time understanding how our clients use their bathroom before recommending any design ideas. Every household is different, and every renovation should reflect that.

If you're collecting ideas for your own renovation, we've written an article about designing a bathroom that combines style with practicality. It might give you a few ideas before you start planning.

One of the biggest misconceptions about bathroom renovations is that they begin with choosing tiles.

In reality, the best projects start with understanding the home itself.

Older Christchurch properties can sometimes hide issues such as ageing plumbing, uneven floors or previous alterations that aren't obvious until work begins. Taking the time to identify these before the renovation starts can help avoid unexpected costs and keep the project running smoothly.

That's why planning is such an important part of the process. It's not about making the renovation bigger or more complicated. It's about making informed decisions before the first wall lining is removed.

At RC Jamieson Builders, we've been helping Christchurch homeowners renovate with confidence since 1939. Every home is different, and every renovation deserves careful planning from the very beginning.

We've written an article explaining why preparation is one of the most valuable parts of any bathroom renovation. If you're thinking about updating your bathroom, it's well worth a read.

Is your bathroom still working for the way you live?

It's easy to focus on colours, tiles and tapware when planning a renovation. While those decisions are important, they're only part of creating a bathroom you'll enjoy for years to come.

A well-designed bathroom should make everyday life easier. Better storage, improved lighting, a more practical layout and quality fittings can have just as much impact as the finished appearance.

At RC Jamieson Builders, we've been renovating Christchurch homes since 1939. One thing we've learned is that every family uses their bathroom differently. That's why every renovation starts with understanding how you want the space to work, before making design recommendations.

If you're considering updating your bathroom, we've written an article about designing a bathroom that's not only beautiful, but practical as well.

Thinking about renovating your bathroom?

Most people start by choosing tiles, colours and tapware. Those decisions are exciting, but they're rarely the first ones that should be made.

Behind every successful bathroom renovation is good planning. Older Christchurch homes can hide things like outdated plumbing, uneven floors or previous repairs that need attention before the new finishes go in.

Taking the time to understand what's already there can help avoid unexpected costs and give you a result that will last for years to come.

Thinking about renovating? This is the work that should happen first.

Before new finishes go in, it is important to make sure the underlying structure is ready.

Depending on the home, that may involve:

• Removing damaged wall linings
• Replacing ageing ceilings
• Levelling floors
• Repairing framing
• Correcting previous workmanship issues

Preparation work may not be the exciting part of a renovation, but it often determines how successful the final result will be.

Done properly, it helps avoid problems later.

Does your floor feel slightly uneven? It could be telling you something.

Many homeowners notice a slight slope, bounce or uneven feel underfoot and assume it is just part of living in an older home.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it is a sign that remedial work is needed before further renovations take place.

Floor levelling is often one of the most important steps in preparing a home for new flooring, bathrooms, kitchens or other upgrades.
Getting the foundations right helps everything that follows perform better.
