A truckload of schist feature rocks leaving Poolburn, on its way to Auckland. Each piece has been carefully chosen to form a striking water feature, bringing southern colour and character into a new landscape.

Our team are experienced in packing and preparing all shapes and sizes of stone for transport - and MELX, our transport partner, do a great job getting them there in one piece! We look forward to seeing the finished result.

HIRING: Quarry Worker - Poolburn Stone Quarry

We are looking for a permanent full-time quarry worker to join our small team at Poolburn where we cut, trim, and shape schist for use in the stonemasonry industry.

Starting pay will be $30.00 per hour for someone with no experience and is negotiable for someone who has worked in a similar role in a quarry before.

Our quarry workers operate a conveyor, manipulator, and the guillotine before trimming stone by hand with an axe and sorting it into bags. It is a physically demanding role with a strong focus on working safely to avoid injury.

We are looking for someone who is used to working outdoors and who is already fit and ready to start a physical job. It could suit someone who has worked as a labourer in farming, construction, or similar.

We currently offer:
* Wages that are reviewed at least every 12 months.
* A safety-focussed and supportive work environment.
* Guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week guaranteed (even if the quarry isn't operating), but we normally work between 40 and 45 hours per week.
* Work/life balance: We understand that life sometimes has to take priority over work, and we approach this with compassion.
* Free staff transport from Alexandra.
* On completion of the 90-day trial period, a wellbeing allowance of up to $100 per month to be spent on things like physio, massage, counselling, dentistry, gym membership, etc.

Last day of the school holidays and what better way to spend it than at the quarry. The kids were so into it we ended up staying late just so they could see how rock gets split on the guillotine.

Not too many years now before they’re out there doing some real work themselves.

CASUAL QUARRY WORKERS - CLUDEN

We are looking for 1-2 casual workers for Cluden Quarry from now until the end of May. You will be working in the paving area initially, selecting and trimming larger flat stones typically used in gardens as paving and stepping stones. Training on the guillotine will be given for those who show good aptitude.

The work is very physical and suits people who are used to working outdoors and are already fit and ready to start a physical job. You must be able to lift stones weighing around 20 kg from the ground to waist height and into a bag multiple times per day. Training in safe lifting techniques will be given before work is started.

This is a casual employment arrangement to help support our permanent team through to the start of winter. It could suit a seasonal worker who is looking for work between summer and winter. Must be able to commit to full time work until the end of May.

You will be paid an hourly rate ($30.00) plus 8% holiday pay on top, giving a total hourly rate of $32.40 before tax. We provide free transport from Wānaka to the quarry.

HIRING: Permanent full-time Quarry Worker - Poolburn Stone Quarry (near Alexandra)

Due to the recent installation of a second guillotine at Poolburn, we are recruiting for a full-time (42.5 hours per week), permanent Quarry Worker for Poolburn Stone Quarry. Free staff transport is available from Alexandra. You will become the fourth permanent member of our team there and we are looking for someone who will fit in well to our safety-conscious, friendly environment.

Starting pay will be $30.00 per hour for someone with no experience and is negotiable for someone who already has quarry experience.

Our quarry workers operate the guillotine and cut, trim, and shape stone for use in the stonemasonry industry. They operate machinery such as the digger, loader, conveyor, and generator. Full training is provided.

We are looking for someone who is used to working outdoors and who is already fit and ready to start a physical job.

This role could suit someone who has worked as a labourer in farming, construction, or similar. There is the potential to turn this job into a career since we will support quarry apprenticeship training for the right person, which can lead to a B Grade Quarry Manager certificate.

We had a great time on our Christmas do this year getting up close and personal with rock in a different way! (Thank you Wildwire Wanaka).

Now we're working hard on those last few bags for the year before shutting down for Christmas. Our team will be having a well-earned rest and we hope you have a relaxing festive season too.

We will be closed for three weeks from midday Friday 19 December, re-opening on Monday 12 January.

We'll be back in 2026 with a new (second) guillotine at Poolburn and a larger team at both quarries. We look forward to sharing more next year 🙂
