How specialist thinking saved ratepayers hundreds of thousands 💰💧

When a severe storm destroyed the bridge providing access to one of Wellington's drinking water intakes, Tiaki Wai needed a permanent replacement.

A new bridge had already been designed and consented, and Bridge It NZ was asked to price its construction.

We could have simply priced the plans in front of us. Instead, we took another look at the problem.

Our team developed an alternative 12m bridge design that could be constructed clear of the stream – removing the need for stream diversion, significantly simplifying construction and reducing environmental risk.

The result? A faster, simpler solution that saved Wellington ratepayers $227,500 in construction costs.

Beautiful day in the Bay, so we stopped in to check on a pedestrian bridge we completed for Tauranga City Council back in 2019. ☀️

Always good to revisit an old project and see it still serving the community years later.

As part of the Warkworth–Te Hana section of the SH1 motorway upgrade, our client’s existing farm access was affected, meaning a new way into the property was needed.

And in this case, one bridge wasn’t enough!

The new accessway required two bridges – a 26m Steel Beam Concrete Deck bridge and a 14m All Concrete bridge – to keep the property connected and the farm operating as usual.

After a quick visit to site, our team was able to work out which bridge solutions were the best fit and give the client a good indication of cost upfront, before we were formally engaged.

For longer spans like the 26m bridge, steel beams can be spliced into sections to make transport and installation easier when access is tricky. This one, however, made the trip in one piece! The full 26m steel superstructure was transported to site fully assembled on a jinker unit.

The journey of a 26m Steel Beam Concrete Deck bridge, from our workshop to site.

A huge effort from our workshop team, transport partners and site crew to safely deliver and install this bridge.

For a span of this length, a Steel Beam Concrete Deck bridge was the most cost-effective solution, delivering the strength, durability and performance required for the site.

Steel Beam Concrete Deck bridges are one of our most popular bridge types thanks to their versatility. Their customisable design makes them a great solution for longer spans and more complex sites.

It's always rewarding seeing months of planning, fabrication and teamwork come together on site. 👏
