Great training session with the Geeves Timaru team today, focusing on one of the biggest risks in our industry — working at height.
We ran three practical training stations led by our Supervisors and overseen by our Group H&S & Training Manager, Vadim.
1️⃣ Harnesses, lanyards & fall prevention
The team worked through harness and lanyard inspections, looking for damaged or worn webbing, stitching and hardware. We then explored safety-line and static-line options, with the focus always being on preventing the fall in the first place.
2️⃣ Safe scaffold build methods
Crews practised the step-up method, allowing scaffolders to work from behind installed handrails without exposing themselves to a fall and without relying solely on a harness.
We also practised the tunnelling method, installing handrails ahead before stepping into the next bay to minimise exposure.
3️⃣ Rescue from height
The team worked through several realistic rescue scenarios and the different methods available depending on the scaffold.
For more straightforward builds, this included the pull-in rescue method and using the basic rope rescue kits carried in our trucks to release a casualty from their lanyard and lower them safely.
We then moved into more technical scenarios, including a fall from a cantilever using a Type 3 rescue hub to either lower the casualty to the ground or winch them back to the lift above, as well as rescuing someone suspended from a lattice beam above a void, where lowering directly to ground isn't possible.
It wouldnt be a good training day without a bbq thrown in. 🌭
A valuable day of practical training — not just talking about working safely at height, but giving our people the opportunity to practise the methods and rescues they may one day need to rely on.
Train for it. Practise it. Be ready for it. 🧡
