Snow settled across Christchurch this morning, and inside a hydronic home the floor is still quietly warm.

If you are building new, this is the decision that shapes every winter you spend in the house. Pipes are laid into the foundation before the concrete is poured, then an air-to-water heat pump warms the water flowing through them, turning your whole slab into a gentle, even heat store from the ground up.

The Electricity Authority, the government regulator overseeing New Zealand's power sector, reports power bills have jumped another 8% this winter, on top of last year's 8% rise. If your home relies on heating that eats power, that sting only gets sharper.

Hydronic underfloor heating turns your whole floor into a gentle, even radiator, warming your home from the ground up. Clients tell us it can bring running costs down to around a quarter of traditional electric heating.

That musty smell, the dark spots on the ceiling, the damp corner in the bedroom. Sound familiar?

You are not alone. Experts say New Zealand has a real residential mould and dampness problem, with around one in five homes damp and mould most often taking hold where warm, moist air meets cold surfaces. The good news is it is largely preventable. The single most effective thing you can do is control moisture, and that is exactly what a balanced heat recovery ventilation system does. It quietly replaces stale, damp air with fresh filtered air, recovers up to 90 percent of the outgoing heat, and helps keep your home dry, warm and healthier for the whole family, especially little ones and older folks.

Bare feet on a warm floor, even in the middle of a Canterbury winter, and a lighter footprint on the planet too.

That is what hydronic underfloor heating gives you. Warm water circulates through pipes laid in the concrete slab beneath your floor, gently radiating heat from the ground up through every room. Because it runs at lower water temperatures than traditional radiators, it uses less energy while still keeping your whole home evenly warm, no cold corners, no draughts. Pair it with an air-to-water heat pump, and even solar panels, and you have a heating system that is kind to your power bill and kind to the environment.

Does your hot water cylinder really need to sit at 60 degrees, all day, every day?

It is a common myth, and the truth is a bit more relaxed. Legionella bacteria thrives between 20 and 45 degrees, and dies off at 60 degrees and above, which is why the NZ Building Code (Clause G12) asks for cylinders to reach at least 60 degrees to keep bacteria in check. But that does not mean constant 60 degree water. Under Australian and New Zealand standards, a cylinder thermostat can safely sit at 55 degrees, especially with a heat pump, because the water coming in is already hotter and the combination of heat and time still does the job.

For safety at the tap, plumbers set the cylinder at 60 degrees or above and fit a tempering valve, since water at the shower or basin must not exceed 55 degrees. Add a hot water heat pump into the mix, and you get all this safety with lower running costs, up to $200 saved per person, per year, so a family of five could save around $1000 annually.

Curious whether a heat pump could bring your hot water bills down while keeping your family safe? We are always happy to chat.

Will hot water take too long to reach your ensuite?

If your ensuite sits a fair way from the cylinder, a short wait is completely normal. With a pipe run of around 18 metres, it usually takes about 10 to 20 seconds for hot water to arrive while the cool water in the pipe flushes through. Insulating your pipes, adding a point-of-use booster, or fitting a recirculation loop on a smart timer can all bring that wait right down.

Is your home holding its breath this winter?

When the temperature drops in Canterbury, we close everything up to keep the warmth in. The trouble is, all that lovely heat comes with moisture from cooking, showers and simply breathing, and with the windows shut it has nowhere to go. That trapped damp is what feeds mould, condensation on the windows, and the kind of stale air that can stir up asthma and allergies, especially for children and older family members.

It can be worse in newer, well-insulated homes. The tighter and more efficient the build, the more it needs a way to bring fresh air in without losing the heat you are paying for.

That is exactly what a heat recovery ventilation system does. It quietly extracts the warm, moist air from your kitchen and bathrooms, then uses a heat exchanger to warm the fresh incoming air with the heat it just recovered. The result is constant filtered fresh air, balanced humidity, and a drier, healthier home, all winter and right through the year, without opening a single window.

Based in Christchurch and serving the wider Canterbury region, we design, install and maintain the whole system for your home. We are always happy to chat about what would suit your place. Call our team on 0800 477 778 or book your free assessment.

Ever wondered what your heating really costs, long after the heater is installed?

The sticker price of a heater can be misleading. The true cost shows up over the years you run it, and that is where the picture changes. A research from Rewiring Aotearoa compared five common ways to heat a Kiwi home over 15 years, including purchase, installation and energy bills.

The result is clear. An electric heat pump comes in cheapest overall at around $10,815 over its life, while gas heating climbs to about $20,608 and LPG to roughly $26,396. The reason is efficiency. A heat pump does not create heat, it moves it, running at about 350 percent efficiency, so it costs roughly three times less to run than gas.

Cheaper upfront options can quietly cost you thousands more across the years. A heat pump strikes the best balance: a moderate start, the lowest running cost, and the lowest lifetime cost of the lot.

Thinking about moving off gas, diesel or an old burner? We are always happy to chat and walk you through what would suit your Canterbury home. Book your free assessment today.

Hot showers without the bill shock. That is the quiet promise of a hot water heat pump.

Heating water makes up around a third of a typical power bill, so it is one of the easiest places to find real savings. A hot water heat pump uses about a third of the energy of a standard electric cylinder, and Gen Less estimates the average household could save around $284 a year. With nearly half of Kiwi homes running cylinders over 10 years old, it is worth knowing your options before yours gives out in the middle of a Canterbury cold snap.

If your cylinder is getting on, we are always happy to talk it through and help you find the right fit for your home. Book your free assessment with our team.
