We create living soil here in Wanaka. It is crafted for the Wanaka soil. We have added trace minerals and nutrients that is lacking in Wanaka soil, all naturally occurring ingredients of course. Included are humates, biochar, calcium and lots of live microbes. Add a bag of our living soil to your garden to grow more nutritious vegetables and healthier plants. Is your lawn not cutting it? We can help. Years of experience in Wanaka doing lawns and hydroseeding has taught us a lot about the local silt-based soil and its poor aeration, drainage and nutrient retention properties. Add to this the high compaction and low organic content of our soil and your lawn is going to struggle to make the cover of Lawn p**n magazine.
So how can we bring your lawn to life? By bringing your soil to life, we bring in high complexity carbon humates to raise the organic content of the soil. This acts as a home for the other essential component, billions upon billions of microbes. These naturally occurring little beasties are an essential component of the soil food web and are relatively sparce in our soil.
So what effects will humates and microbes have? Increased drainage, water retention and aeration, reduced compaction and an increase of the electron exchange capacity of the soil (how easily the roots are able to access the nutrients in the soil).
Living soil is also amazing at cycling nutrients (for a plant to be able to pick up nutrients they need to be water soluble which means they leach out into groundwater, soil microbes cycle nutrients form soluble to insoluble as part of their lifecycle). Cycling of nutrients also reduces the boom-and-bust growth cycles of synthetic fertilizers which contributes to thatching.

Garlic Planting Time and Living Soil

Hello Wanaka gardeners.
It's garlic planting time and at Living Landscapes we have got just the thing to help you grow great, nutrient-dense organic garlic. We produce a living soil mix to add to your garden. It has all sorts of goodies in it like biochar, humates, worm poo and microbes to name a few. It’s designed to increase the carbon in soil and create a high biomass soil which increases soil structure, aeration, water retention and aids in making nutrients available to plants (to get all science-y, it increases the electron exchange capacity of the soil so plants can more easily access nutrients). It also reduces soil compaction which is common in our glacial silt dominated soil allowing roots to grow more easily, pretty much our living soil mix will turbocharge your gardening. It works for for all plants not just garlic but I was getting my garlic ready to plant. Winter is a great time to bring your soil to life. We sell 20 litre bags of goodness for $45 or we can help create gardens that will produce organic, nutrient dense vegetables for years to come.

We are currently offering free delivery in the Wanaka are on Sundays for our living soil mixes.
We have the 'veggie box' mix and a 'tree and perennial planting mix'. These contain humates, biochar, vermicast, volcanic rock dust, wood ash and bone meal (though a bone meal free version can be requested if you would prefer). For the veggie mix just spread it through your garden beds or put in in your veggie box. If you are planting new plants use the tree and perennial planting mix.
How do these mixes help?
1. It increases crop yield.
2. it increases the nutrients available to plants and lowers rates of nutrient depletion during the growing season.
3. it aids the uptake of nutrients to plants.
4 Increases the nutrient value and physical appearance of fruit, veg and flowers and the plant itself.
5. Better water retention and drainage.
6. Great for Improving our Central Otago Soil.
