Another big week for the team, with plenty more storm clean-up following the wild weather before the school holidays. A huge effort from the crew getting the schools safe and tidy! 🌳💪 Now for some well-earned rest.

We’re urging farmers across the country to take extra care when clearing storm-damaged trees after receiving more reports of unsafe chainsaw and machinery use.

Make sure any machinery used is fit for purpose and has the appropriate operator protective structure.

The risks are serious. One person fell four metres while using a chainsaw on a partly fallen tree and required major surgery. Another suffered a deep chainsaw injury to their foot.

🌊💨 SEVERE SOUTHERLY GALES TO BATTER THE WELLINGTON REGION THIS FRIDAY! 💨🌊
OWHIRO BAY!

A potentially significant southerly event is shaping up for Wellington later this week.

💨 Severe southerly gale winds could exceed 140 km/h in exposed locations.

🌊 Large swell waves may exceed 7 metres, with the possibility of even higher waves offshore and along exposed coastlines.

⚠️ Owhiro Bay and South Coast residents should start preparing now, particularly if you live in an area susceptible to coastal inundation or tidal surge. Sandbagging may be required in vulnerable locations.

🌬️ Southerly winds are expected to begin increasing from around 5am Thursday, then progressively strengthen over the following 48 hours.

🏡 Now is the time to:
✅ Secure trampolines
✅ Tie down outdoor furniture
✅ Bring loose items inside
✅ Secure those elusive wheelie bins that always seem to break the speed limit along the South Coast! 😄

There is still time for forecast details to change, but this is certainly a weather system worth keeping a close eye on.

WorkSafe New Zealand is appealing to Southland farmers to put safety first, following a spike in tip offs about risky handling of wind-damaged trees.
