Meet Rangitahi 👋

🌲Kia Ora ko Rangitahi wi toku ingoa, I am 20 yrs of age, born in the far north Kaitaia and from the haukainga of Te Kao.

🌲I am the younger brother to 2 sisters and have never had a pet. At the beginning of 2023, I moved to Rotorua to study for a Diploma in Forestry Management at Toi Ohomai. I was privileged to be awarded a scholarship from Te Uru Rakau, which has helped tremendously in all aspects.

🌲My father moved to Turangi from Te Kao to pursue a career in forestry and now has over 40 years in the industry, so from a young age, it was known to me. On weekends or school holidays, my old mate sometimes took me to work with him, and the thought of calling our Ngahere my office always stayed with me.

🌲Forestry is a forever growing and evolving industry. As Maori, care and protection of our Whenua and Ngahere is Tikanga and representation within the workforce helps to improve and upkeep these important factors. Whether the outdoors in the fresh air is your game or using satellite programs to scan digitally and outlay forestry blocks, This sector has unlimited potential for careers and pathways.

Ko Māmari te Waka
Ko Pōtahi Te Marae
Ko Te Aupōuri Te Iwi

Nga mihi

“If you want to change the world, then Science is the way to go” - says Shane Davidson. 🧬🌲

💥'It’s never been more easy to make an impact on other people, your innovations can have wide-reaching influence.'

💥Shane would know. As the founder and managing director of MAProgress, he’s transforming the way the world sees and experiences outdoor sporting events.

💥Shane went to Temuka High School (now Opihi College) in South Canterbury and gained a Bachelor of Forestry Science from UC, specialising in conservation forestry, before returning to study computer science and GIS.

💥Shane’s advice to anyone thinking about studying forestry science?

💥'Go for it! You’ll need a wide range of skills for the future, and it may not be specifically in the areas you study. If you have a desire to be in your own business then science will help you expand your horizons to get an understanding of other areas and enable you to relate better to more people.'

QnA Time with Graham Parker Wildlife and Conservationist 🌱🌏🦉

🌎What is your role? 🌎

I'm a consultant wildlife biologist. I specialise in ornithology, and have an special interest in the conflict between human activities and wildlife. As well as forestry interactions with native birds, I work with fisheries bycatch, farming operations, wind farms, mines, and tourism.

🌎What do you love most about your role? 🌎

Finding solutions to challenging problems, and working with industry experts to utilise their in depth knowledge.

🌎Why should someone join the forestry industry? 🌎

I can recommend working with the forest industry because we need wood for society. Exotic forestry is a significant land user, native wildlife utilise forestry, and plantation forestry interacts with native forest through providing habitat and dispersal corridors.

🌎What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?🌎

Formal qualifications are only part of an education. Self-directed learning is vital.

Does anyone know what this pest is?

🔴Clue #1 - This moth is a native of Europe.

🟢Clue #2 - The females can fly several kilometres.

🟡Clue #3 - The caterpillars make holes and galleries (tunnels) in the growing shoots of pine trees. This damage can cause the tree to grow crookedly and can kill the growing shoot.

🔵Clue #4 - While the tree may not die, trees infested with this moth will be shorter and narrower than unaffected trees.

RISK AHEAD⚠️

Biosecurity is one of the greatest risks to the New Zealand primary industries.

That's why there is a large team of Biosecurity managers and technical staff who are responsible for monitoring the health of growing forests.

A career in Biosecurity allows you to work both indoors and outdoors. Through the role, you will get to take foliage samples, make health assessments, and give recommendations on nutrient requirements and treatment.
