⚠️ Power Point Safety with Glen

When we spot unsafe electrical setups in homes or businesses, we share it, because keeping our community safe is at the heart of what we do 💚

You might know Glen as one of the community's hard working firefighters, but we're also lucky to have him as one of our amazing, longstanding electricians. Here’s his advice on power point safety:

A cracked or broken power point isn’t just cosmetic-it can expose live wires and cause shock, burns, or fire. Even if it still works, it’s not safe!

⚡ Broken faceplates or loose fittings can leave live wiring accessible, meaning:

• Accidental contact can result in serious electric shock or electrocution.
• Metal objects (keys, tools, appliances) can make contact and cause arcing which is extremely dangerous

🚨 Warning Signs to act on immediately:

• Cracks, chips, or missing pieces on the outlet
• Loose or wobbly power points
• Discolouration, burn marks, or melted plastic
• Sparking when plugging in devices

✅ What You Should Do:

• Do not use the damaged power point
• Turn off power at the switchboard if safe to do so
• Keep others away from the area, especially tamariki
• Arrange repair by a qualified electrician as soon as possible
• Never attempt DIY electrical repairs

A Final word from Glen- “If it’s cracked, it’s not just cosmetic—it could be electric.”

For any queries or concerns around electrical safety in your home, contact ESL on 03 788 9900, and we'll be happy to help.

🍂 Autumn Home Electricity Safety Tips 🍂

As the weather cools down, we start spending more time indoors which means increased use of electricity at home. Now is a great time to check in on your home electrical safety.

🏠 Stay safe this Autumn:

⚡ Don’t overload power boards or multi-plugs
⚡ Check cords and appliances for wear or damage
⚡ Keep heaters well clear of curtains, furniture, and anything flammable
⚡ Use appliances according to manufacturer instructions
⚡ Turn off and unplug devices when not in use

🔥 Heating safety matters:
Portable heaters are a leading cause of house fires - always keep at least 1 metre clear space around them and never leave them running unattended.

🌧️ Watch for moisture:
Autumn brings damp conditions - keep electrical items dry and never use appliances with wet hands or near water.

🔌 Outdoor awareness:
Be cautious using electrical equipment outside - ensure cords are suitable for outdoor use and protected from the elements.

If something doesn’t look or feel right, get it checked by a qualified electrician.

Let’s keep our homes warm, safe, and powered this Autumn 🍁⚡
