It is with much sadness we farewell our friend and colleague Liam Ranby today.

Starting with us at 17 years old, neither us nor Liam expected the job to be anything more than a short stint picking kiwifruit. But here we are 3.5 years later, and the memories made during that time have left a lasting impression on our team.

Liam was mature beyond his years, was always keen to give things a go and was well on his way to completing his Primary ITO horticulture apprenticeship. He was just as happy out on the tractor mulching or bringing in kiwifruit bins, to working with the team around him and blasting out some of his favorite tunes for everyone to enjoy.

Our thoughts go out to Liam’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Thank you for the time you spent with us Liam. Your heart, your happiness, your vitality, and your hair will always be remembered.

The team at Maungatapere Berries couldn't be prouder of our own Packhouse Manager, Finnisha Tuhiwai for being one of three finalists in the Ahuwenua Young Maori Grower award in 2020. This is the first time this award has been run, and judging will happen later this year. Keep watching this space.

While our nation is adjusting to this strange new normal, we want to take this opportunity to reassure our loyal customers of how our business is handling the COVID-19 Level 4 restrictions. Onyx Capital (trading as Maungatapere Berries) has been confirmed as an Essential Business by MPI and will carry on delivering fantastic berries to you, but with additional hygiene and safety precautions in place to protect our employees & customers.

As you may know we have two very distinct parts of our business. One is producing tasty fresh Raspberries, Blackberries, Solberries and Blueberries, and the other growing beautiful Zespri Gold and Green Kiwifruit. Our Raspberry season is still underway and we will continue to provide New Zealand's very best tasting raspberries to supermarkets during this time. We are limiting transport routes so currently they will only be available in the upper north island.

To keep our employees safe, our entire workforce has been split into 9 individual shifts, that have no interaction with each other, different rostered days, different start times and break times. We are strictly enforcing the two metre social distancing rule for our team.

But in these changing times, our focus on food safety and quality is still essential. The berry harvest team continue to pick wearing gloves & adhere to policies that protect themselves and the safety of our fruit. Picking with gloves is not new to us, hygiene has always been our top priority, and we are pleased to be industry leaders here! This will continue with other measures in place to ensure we maintain fruit that is safe to consume, without washing!

Kiwifruit harvest is also in full swing and we will have our pickers very carefully distanced. They will have no contact with each other in the kiwifruit bays and will adhere to the two metre rule here.

Safety is and will continue to be our number 1 priority. For our staff. For our customers. For everyone.

Water conservation is so important to us. Read a little about what we do to protect our precious resource here.

Maungatapere Berries recognises the absolute value in both limiting our water use as much as possible and also protecting the water resources that we have. We are lucky that we live in a fairly temperate climate, meaning we get lots of sunshine, but equally a good deal of rain, and any captured rainwater is collected for further usage (in our 9 million litre reservoir) or injected into the underground aquifer for the benefit of all in the region (at an estimated rate of 63 million litres every year).

With our kiwifruit blocks, because they are designed to allow rain to fall through the canopy to reach the roots, heavy rain that runs over the surface is captured and returned to lake on the property. The water is diverted through a small wetland area and riparian plantings which is planted to filter any nutrient and silt particles to keep the lake and the stream that it feeds into clean and clear.

We also regularly test our water to make sure it is safe for our fruit, our workers and our consumers

We are committed to protecting all of our valuable resources so that we can continue to grow sustainably into the future.

We’re proud of our commitment to sustainability here at Onyx Capital. Take a look at an innovative new product we are using on the orchard.

As part of our drive to be a fully sustainable operation we are trialing a revolutionary new fencepost in the expansion of our orchard. These fenceposts are made entirely from recycled plastic (domestic and commercial waste), are as strong as timber posts, they won't split/crack/rot and they help to solve an environmental concern that all of us have with how much plastic waste is occurring in NZ. We're excited to be using these!
