The majority of the oil has been removed from the grounded bulk carrier OS 35 off of Gibraltar and the operation is now moving to the recovery phase, according to today’s update from the Gibraltar Port Authority.

Efforts continue to clean up and prevent the spread of escaped oil, including impacts on nearby beaches and wildlife.

The Tuvalu-flagged OS 35 was outbound from Gibraltar Port when it collided with the unladen LNG carrier Adam LNG in the Bay of Gibraltar on Monday, August 29. The OS 35 was then anchored off Catalan Bay, on the opposite side of the Iberian Peninsula, where it partially sank.

The Captain of the Port and the Gibraltar Contingency Council declared a Major Incident under the Civil Contingencies Act to free up more resources to respond to the incident, however, this level of response has been stood down as the operation moves from emergency response to recovery.

The largest and most ambitious ocean cleanup project in history is claiming its first 100,000 kg of plastic removed from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The company behind the project, called The Ocean Cleanup, announced the milestone this week, about a year after its second system was deployed to the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii.

Since then, the system has collected 101,353 kg of plastic over 45 extractions, sweeping an area approximately the size of Rhode Island. Combined with its first system, the total amount of plastic collected weighs in at 108,526 kg, more than the combined weight of two and a half Boeing 737-800s.

A.P. Moller-Maersk has withdrawn its board member from industry organisation International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), partly over the trade association’s stance on climate change, according to the company’s website.

Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping groups, has been part of ICS’s board for around a decade, but Maersk executive and board member Henriette Hallberg Thygesen has stepped down after an annual revision of trade association memberships.

“We review our membership status once a year to ensure that the trade associations in which we are members lobby in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement as well as other key issues,” Maersk said on its website.

The Paris agreement is a legally binding treaty between the world’s countries, agreed in 2015, which aims to limit global warming by curbing global greenhouse gas emissions.

“Our choice to step down from the ICS Board should also be seen in this context,” it added, without specifying what it disagreed with ICS’s stance.

A spokesperson told Reuters the decision had been announced at an ICS annual general meeting on June 22

Maersk also said it would focus its efforts on its membership of the World Shipping Council (WSC), a trade group for container shippers.

More than 2% of global freight capacity is at a standstill in the North Sea, an expert from Germany’s IfW (Institut für Weltwirtschaft) economic institute said, a “very unusual” situation for the ports there. “There is currently no end in sight to the congestion in container shipping,” said IfW’s Vincent Stamer, adding that traffic jams were also growing outside Chinese ports.

Logistics companies have been struggling for months with shipping container schedules, which have been thrown into disarray due to the war in Ukraine and lockdowns in China. German logistics firm HHLA last month appealed to every link in the supply chain, from clients to railroads, to coordinate better in the face of war-induced disruptions.

There are also roughly 20% fewer container ships in the Red Sea – the most important trade route between Europe and Asia – than expected under normal circumstances, said the IfW. The last time the gap was this large was after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic two years ago.

A new UN report warns logistics professionals not to discount the impact of the Ukraine War on overall ship demand or get too excited about the recent decline of shipping rates in certain markets. Additionally, the report indicates that maritime freight rates continue to be a major factor driving global inflation.

According to the report published by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), shipping costs have been on the rise since 2020, but war in Ukraine continues to exacerbate this trend and could reverse the temporary decline in shipping rates some markets have seen in recent months.

At the moment, grain shipments are the UN’s biggest concern, but rising bunker costs, sanctions, insurance costs, and stranded Russian cargo are all stressing the maritime transportation system.
