OVERSPEED GOVERNOR WIRE ROPE REPLACEMENT FROM ONE OF OUR HIGH RISE CONDOMINIUM CLIENT
- An elevator's overspeed governor wire rope must be replaced when wear, fatigue, or damage compromises its ability to accurately track car speed and reliably trigger the safety gear.
The primary reasons for replacement include:
• Wire Breaks: Accumulating crown or valley wire breaks beyond code-permitted limits (such as ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) A17.1 or EN 81 standards) due to fatigue and friction.
• Diameter Reduction: Continuous wear, stretching, or loss of internal core support causing the rope diameter to drop below safety thresholds (typically a 10% reduction from nominal size).
• Corrosion and Rouging: The appearance of red dust ("rouge") or rust, which indicates internal fretting, moisture contamination, or dried-out core lubrication.
• Physical Deformations: Kinks, bird-caging, crushing, or severe localized damage often resulting from mechanical stress or previous safety gear engagement tests.
• Elongation and Loss of Tension: Excessive stretching or slack that prevents proper grip in the governor sheave, risking delayed actuation or false slipping during an emergency.
