Are you familiar with the “Boots” Theory?

It’s a theory of an economic trap wherein individuals buy a cheaper and lower quality good that requires repair and replacement which ends up costing more than if you would have invested in a higher quality good in the first place. Why? Simple, because it seemed cheaper at the time.

The architectural profession here in the philippines has been replaced by Pinterest professionals. “May peg na ko pagaya na lang.” The thing is, the Philippines has it’s own unique climate, local materials, labor and code restrictions. It rarely happens that a “Peg” can be copied in its entirety. Neither can the copied Peg hold up its performance requirements. Architects go through a deliberate process of design to extract and customize their projects to the specific requirements of the client, the site and local ordinances. Specific requirements ranging from physical, emotional, commercial or even cultural.

Architects are also in charge of balancing aesthetic, comfort, costs, client preferences and other pragmatic considerations. Unfortunately, this level of understanding is rarely ever touched upon, design has always been defined by its fees rather than its benefits. Benefits are also rarely so easily compared since people only typically get to build one home and stick to one process that they’ve tried.

Filipinos need better homes and it starts with seeing the longer picture. Homes are built to last, think about the long term costs, not just the initial ones.
