August soil holds a secret most gardeners overlook. It's actually warmer than spring soil — and that means seeds sprout faster now than they would in April. Even better, a light frost later in the season won't ruin the harvest. It makes certain greens and roots taste sweeter. There are nine tips in this list covering everything from timing the planting window to keeping that soil moist through the heat. A few of them are easy to miss — and they make a real difference come fall. See which ones are hiding in the full list. [4SJPV]

Saving seeds from your favorite tomatoes involves a little more than scooping them out and leaving them on a paper towel to dry. 🍅 Tomato seeds have a natural coating that makes proper preparation an important part of successful seed saving. One particular step may look strange at first, but it helps prepare seeds for drying, storage and future planting. Learning the process also allows you to preserve treasured heirloom varieties and reduce the need to purchase new packets each season. That especially delicious tomato growing in your garden today could provide the seeds for an entire crop next year.

Beautyberry is hard to ignore once autumn arrives. Clusters of vivid purple berries cover its branches, creating a display unlike almost anything else in the landscape. 💜 But good looks are only part of what makes this shrub worth considering. Beautyberry can provide seasonal color, attract pollinators and songbirds, tolerate challenging conditions and even offer some unexpected practical uses.

There are native and non-native varieties to consider, too, depending on your garden. If you want a hardworking shrub that becomes especially impressive when many other plants are winding down, beautyberry has several compelling qualities waiting to be discovered.

Philippine Brown Deer Sighting

A possible sighting of a Philippine brown deer in Barangay Hanopol, Balilihan, Bohol has drawn attention from local officials and environmental advocates, with Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado calling for the protection of the animal and the preservation of its natural habitat. The reported animal is believed to be a Philippine brown deer, although the sighting has not yet been independently confirmed by wildlife experts. Authorities are encouraging residents to avoid disturbing or harming the animal while proper verification and monitoring can be conducted.

The Philippine brown deer is a native deer species that forms an important part of the country's forest ecosystems. Like other herbivores, deer can influence vegetation through grazing and contribute to the movement of seeds within their habitat. However, native wildlife populations can be affected by habitat loss, forest fragmentation, hunting, and other human activities. Protecting remaining forest areas is therefore essential for maintaining populations of native mammals.

If the sighting is confirmed, it could provide valuable information about wildlife distribution in Bohol. Documenting native animals outside well-known populations can help scientists and conservation authorities identify potential habitats, wildlife corridors, and areas that may require further biodiversity surveys. A single observation cannot establish the presence of a stable population, but it can serve as an important starting point for additional investigation.

The reported sighting is also a reminder that wildlife conservation depends on cooperation between communities, local governments, researchers, and environmental agencies. Residents who encounter the animal should observe it from a safe distance and avoid capturing, feeding, chasing, or attempting to handle it. Protecting the surrounding forests may ultimately be just as important as protecting the animal itself, because the survival of native wildlife depends on having healthy habitats where they can feed, reproduce, and move safely.

Every spring, I watch folks haul home carloads of expensive bagged soil to fill their brand new raised beds. It breaks my heart a little, mostly because their wallets are a lot lighter and their plants truly won't know the difference. Over thirty years of growing, I've learned that you don't need fancy, premium-priced dirt to get a bumper crop. You really only need a simple, two-ingredient recipe to build incredibly rich, living earth. In fact, the priciest bag at the garden center is actually the absolute *worst* choice for filling a deep bed. Once you know the ratio, you can save a small fortune and just step back to let the worms do the heavy lifting. Nature isn't complicated unless we make it so.

My father’s most ambitious project - a yellow remake of the 1913 C Prince John (dowiana x Hardyana), first made as a semi-alba by Armstrong & Brown. Yellow is a very recessive trait and both parents had to be yellow. #1913

BAGUIO BOTANICAL GARDEN NOW HAS A WORLD-CLASS TOILET

The Baguio Botanical Garden has another reason to be proud after earning the ASEAN Public Toilet Award in 2025, recognizing its commitment to cleanliness, accessibility, hygiene, and sustainability.

While a toilet award may sound simple, it reflects an important part of the visitor experience. Clean, safe, and well-maintained restrooms are essential to quality tourism and show that world-class standards extend beyond Baguio’s famous gardens, pine trees, and cultural attractions.

The recognition highlights Baguio City’s continued efforts to provide better facilities for both locals and visitors.

In Baguio, even the restroom can be a point of pride. Congratulations to the Botanical Garden team for bringing world-class standards to one of the city’s most visited destinations!
