When a three-phase motor is started with a Star–Delta starter, it first begins in the star connection. In this mode, the motor receives reduced voltage, so it starts gently with lower current and lower torque. A timer then waits a few seconds while the motor picks up speed. Once the motor reaches most of its normal speed, the starter switches the windings into the delta connection, giving the motor full voltage and full torque. In this way, the motor starts smoothly and then transitions into normal operation without causing a heavy current surge.

Here is a simplified form of its electrical connection in a relay based controls. Next I will be having it in a PLC-based control.
