First time to do construction administration last year. I usually favor architectural design and urban planning projects over construction. Surprised I could do it and happy with how it turned out. Challenging because it requires managing skills (people and time management, materials purchasing and construction cost accounting). Dressing down, getting and my clothes soiled was fun! Thankful for the experience. Looking forward to more opportunities to design and build.

My holiday week grind. Marching forward to 2023. A renovation /fit out project.

BEACH HOUSE | SECOND HOME

This vacation house is located in an interior lot of a beachfront development. The location map shows how far the beach is from the house location. The challenge therefore was to be able to make beachfront environment seem closer, that is, to provide a view of the marina within this dense development.

Hence the solution was to provide a balcony viewdeck, spacious enough to host outdoor gatherings and folding doors that slide to open to full span of a column bay. The beachfront effect is not confined to the view but also to the sea breeze that goes through the large bay windows and folding doors.

A planned development, there were deeds, restrictions and design guidelines which we complied to.

Saw this in my drawing tools drawer. My trusty old erasing shield. It's rarely used now with AutoCAD, but I still use it for minor corrections where it is still cheaper to erase and draw over than to have a new sheet printed again.

Same goes for your construction project. Take time during planning, seek advise of licensed building professionals, participate in the planning process, agree to learn and contribute to the design. Planning can be tedious and stressful especially when you start weighing costs versus design preferences. But your architect can advise you how to weigh alternatives and guide you to make right and responsible choices. Although the planning can seem complicated for some, it's still far easier and less expensive to make changes on paper than to have to demolish walls at the jobsite. As they say, those who fail to plan, actually plan to fail.
