GET TO KNOW THE BINANWA, THE HOUSE OF THE ATA TRIBE
The Binanwa is the traditional dwelling of the Ata Paquibato cultural community in Paquibato District, Davao City. Elevated high above the ground and crafted from bamboo, timber, bark, cogon, and rattan, the house reflects the Ata people’s deep connection to the uplands and to the rhythms of nature.
Modest in size yet carefully arranged, the Binanwa features a ground space for gathering, a surrounding balcony known as the lantawan, and an upper living area lined with bamboo seating platforms that may also serve as sleeping spaces. Its gabled roof, crowned with the distinctive manok-manok, is a cultural marker that signifies identity, leadership, and tradition.
More than a house, the Binanwa is a living expression of Ata craftsmanship, resilience, and wisdom shaped by land, climate, and community.
