How I Approach a New Site in the First Hour
Whenever I visit a new site, I try to resist the temptation to immediately start designing:

· The first hour is about observation.
· How do people currently move through the property?
· Where does water naturally want to go?
· What are the best views worth preserving?
· Where are the conflicts already hiding?

Some of the most important design decisions happen before I draw a single line. I usually start with a quick sketch, nothing fancy, just enough to capture circulation patterns, opportunities, constraints, and relationships. I create a pre-function diagram highlighting what I see.

Over the years, I've found that sites will often tell you what they want to become if you're willing to spend the time listening. The goal isn't to force a design onto a property. The goal is to understand the framework that's already there, adapt and build upon it.

Good projects often begin with observation before intervention, and that's where clarity starts. With my 38+ years’ experience, I have been afforded the opportunities to work across the US and 12+ years internationally, which has given me the experience to know what to look at, understand existing conditions, and prepare my team, client, and myself for possibilities and constraints.

Lord, thank You for waking me up today with another chance to grow, to try again, and to move closer to the life I’ve been praying for.

I lift up my small business to You this morning. You see every effort, every puyat, every silent worry, and every hope I carry in my heart. On days when sales are slow, remind me that You are still working behind the scenes. On days when blessings overflow, keep me humble and grateful.

The sight of flowers blooming under the scorching sun is a delightful surprise.

Hydrangea season is approaching, and all the waiting is worthwhile, looking back at photos of last year's hydrangeas in full bloom in the garden. A whole expanse of gentle blue-purple-pink instantly transports you back to that summer with its breezes, flowers, and sunshine.

Every year at this time, flower lovers feel an extra sense of anticipation.

Recently, I've seen many flower enthusiasts gently parting the tips of hydrangea buds, just to see if any flower buds are hidden inside.

That cautious yet expectant feeling can only be understood by true flower lovers.
